- Andes Mountains - Travel to a private, self-constructed observatory situated in the mountains, 105 km north of Santiago. The journey is worthwhile, with 260 clear nights annually and exceptionally dark skies, ideal for stargazing, even with the naked eye!
Your hosts will greet you with a traditional “once chilena” (a local version of tea), featuring homemade bread, tea, coffee, artisanal cheeses, and other delightful homemade sweet and savory traditional treats. Following the meal, an Astronomer will introduce you to the cosmology of Andean Cultures, highlighting the significance of certain celestial objects to our ancestors. Then, proceed to the tower (each structure here is aligned with astronomical events), where you will learn to observe the negative spaces in the Milky Way (sacred to many ancient Southern cultures), and continue with telescope observations. The Astronomer will also discuss contemporary Western cosmology to provide context for the objects being observed.
