Highlights

Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is situated 4 km from Assisi. Inside, you’ll find the Porziuncola Chapel, a place cherished by Saint Francis where he received special graces from God. Originally, the Porziuncola was an old chapel surrounded by a small forest, likely giving it its name, and belonged to the Benedictines of the Monastery of S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. After being abandoned for a long time, it was restored by Francesco, who rented it from Abbot Teobaldo. Following the Saint’s death, permanent structures such as the friars’ choir, small oratories, and a small convent were built around the church. In the latter half of the 1500s, Pius V commissioned the construction of a large basilica to enclose and protect the Porziuncola and accommodate the many pilgrims who visited.

Basilica di Santa Chiara - The Basilica of Santa Chiara, a neo-Romanesque style religious building, is located in Assisi. It is one of the most renowned and beautiful churches in Italy and Umbria. The basilica not only marks the historic center of the city but also holds significant artistic and cultural value. Built by Benedictine monks to honor Santa Chiara, born Agnese in 1194 and who passed away on 13 September 1253, it is a key pilgrimage site in Assisi, along with the Porziuncola, the Eremo delle Carceri, the Chiesa Nuova, the Basilica of San Damiano, the Cathedral of San Rufino, and the Basilica of San Francesco.

Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani - This splendid baroque residence, with frescoed vaults from the early seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters, houses the Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi. Inside, there is a significant collection of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.

Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, which has preserved the mortal remains of the seraphic saint since 1230, is one of the most important places of worship in Italy and the world. In 2000, it was added to the UNESCO world heritage list. The first stone of the Basilica was laid on 16 July 1228, just two days after Francis’ death and the day after his canonization by Pope Gregory IX. Tradition holds that Francis himself chose the exact location for his burial. The church is a cornerstone in the spread of Gothic architecture in Italy and holds significant importance for the papacy, which saw the Franciscan order as a key ally in strengthening ties with the common people. Construction began in 1228 under Pope Gregory IX and was consecrated in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV.

Da Cecco - Enjoy free time for lunch, sampling local food and wine, shopping, and strolling around. In the afternoon, the tour continues to Orvieto, where you can marvel at the grandeur of its Gothic Cathedral.

Duomo di Orvieto - The Duomo of Orvieto is one of Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals and a masterpiece of central Italian Gothic architecture. The impressive structure dominates the bluff on which Orvieto is situated. Its facade, with towers reaching about 53 meters high, is renowned worldwide. Inside, the cathedral boasts stunning decorations and frescoes by some of history’s greatest painters, including Luca Signorelli’s famous “Giudizio Universale.”

Orvieto - Discover Orvieto, one of Italy’s oldest cities, with origins tracing back to the Etruscan civilization. The first settlements date to the 9th century BC, located within the tufaceous caves of the massif where the Umbrian town now stands. While Orvieto is famed for its magnificent cathedral, the city offers numerous historical and artistic attractions and itineraries, reflecting its ancient roots. Perched on a cliff, Orvieto also provides breathtaking panoramic views.

A peaceful and informative tour! - This was a wonderful day trip and such a relaxing change from the hustle and bustle of Rome. Our guide, Marie, was professional, prompt and very accommodating when we wanted to amend our trip to spend the remainder of our day in Assisi. This was due in part to the riveting two-hour tour that our local guide, Chiara, provided. The knowledge and passion she shared pertaining to St. Francis and St. Clara were infectious!! As a result, we only wanted to spend more time in the basilica and the charming walled portion of the city of Assisi. I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in learning about St. Francis and the beautiful Basilica di San Francesco!

The best way to visit Assisi and Orvieto - Our private tour day-trip to Assisi and Orvieto in late October, 2023 was perfect! My husband and I were picked up on time, in the early morning, at our hotel in Rome. Our driver, Giuseppe, was accompanied by our tour assistant, also name Giuseppe. Both men could not have been more friendly and considerate. We had an easy drive, first to Orvieto, and then to Assisi, making a rest stop along the way. Giuseppe described the countryside as we drove along and answered any/all of our questions. We asked to go to St. Patrick's Well; I highly recommend it! We saw the important sights of/around Orvieto, especially the magnificent Duomo. In Assisi, after a delicious local lunch, we stopped at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and viewed the Portiuncula inside. In the old town of Assisi, we met up with our local guide, Begonia, who was with us for 2 hours. We had an extensive description of the life of St. Francis and also of the beautiful town. We visited the chapel of St. Clare; the lower church (where St. Francis is buried), and the upper Basilica...all with time for prayer, and with extensive descriptions and interpretations from Begonia. For our comfort, our driver dropped us off the meet Begonia at the upper part of the town of Assisi, giving us a gentle walk down to the Basilica where the driver later picked us up at the bottom. This was a full-day tour, but we never felt rushed or hurried. A bonus: on the drive back to our hotel in the heart of Rome, Giuseppe played music by Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti as we drove through the enchanting Italian countryside. What a wonderful way to visit Assisi and Orvieto - well worth the investment!

This was outstanding. Just my wife... -
This was outstanding. Just my wife and I, along with our guide and driver. We got a great tour of the Basilica of St. Francis, viewed his crypt, walked the city and were fortunate to have a great guide in Catrina. She was very much on top of her game. Knowledgeable, personable, patient, etc., etc. Took time to explain things and found us an excellent restaurant to have a relaxing lunch. The visit to Orvieto was more of the same. If you can take this long day tour, please do so. Worth the time and investment.
