Highlights
  • Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - A fascinating visit to St. Francis Basilica featuring early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, along with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

After Saint Francis passed away in 1226, the friars constructed several small huts around the Porziuncola. By 1230, a refectory and some adjacent buildings were added. Over time, small porticoes and accommodations for the friars were built around the Porziuncola. Foundations of these structures were uncovered during excavations beneath the current basilica’s floor between 1967 and 1969.

As large numbers of pilgrims flocked to Assisi for the “Pardon of Assisi,” the small space of the Porziuncola became insufficient to accommodate them all. This led to the necessity of building a church that incorporated the Porziuncola. The surrounding buildings were demolished by order of Pope Pius V (1566-1572), except for the Chapel of the Transito, where St. Francis died. Construction of the basilica began on 25 March 1569.

  • Basilica di Santa Chiara - Visit the church of Santa Chiara, built between 1257 and 1265 after Santa Chiara’s death, around the ancient church of San Giorgio, which housed St. Francis’s mortal remains until 1230.

  • Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani - A splendid baroque residence with frescoed vaults from the early seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters. The Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi is displayed here, featuring a significant collection of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.

  • Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The mystical town of Saint Francis, still surrounded by its ancient walls, is built on the green slopes of Mount Subasio, with its colorful houses of ink stone. Narrow streets, flower-decked balconies, and noble palaces offer beautiful views for memorable photos (don’t forget your camera). A fascinating visit to St. Francis Basilica with early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

  • Da Cecco - Free time for lunch to taste the typical local food and wine, shop, and walk around. After an hour, the tour will resume.

  • Duomo di Orvieto - The Duomo of Orvieto is one of Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in central Italy. The magnificent building dominates the bluff on which Orvieto is located due to its size. The splendor of its facade, with towers reaching about 53 meters high, is renowned worldwide. Don’t miss the interior of the Duomo, adorned with wonderful decorations and frescoes by some of the greatest painters of the past, including Luca Signorelli’s famous “Giudizio Universale.”

  • Orvieto - Explore Orvieto, one of Italy’s oldest cities, with origins tracing back to the Etruscan civilization. The first settlements date to the 9th century BC, located within the tufaceous caves of the massif on which the Umbrian town now stands. While Orvieto is famed for its magnificent cathedral, the city offers numerous historical and artistic sites and itineraries, thanks to its ancient origins. Perched on a cliff, Orvieto also provides truly splendid panoramic views.

Assisi is a tour perfect for travelers of all religions, not to be missed! - Marie was a fantastic guide and our day was totally awesome being with her, learning so much about St Francis and St Claire. My husband and I are Jewish, but the plaque I photographed demonstrates the respect and inclusiveness of the Franciscans towards Jews and Arabic peoples. That was surprising to us and very moving to learn. Marie lives in Assisi, and her delightful stories about her life in Assisi added so much to the tour. She taught is great deal about both St Francis and St Claire, both of whom broke from their wealthy families to serve the poor. Marie is so warm, knowlegable and engaging, that we will always remember her and the tour as one of our very best days in Italy!

Great country outing and religious history day - Fabulous tour that turned out to be a truly private tour for just the two of us!! Monica was a great guide and Adam a very good driver. They were flexible about what we wanted to spend more time seeing and went out of their way to let us get great photos. The churches were all amazing, especially the Basilica of St. Francis. Assisi and Orvieto were quaint little villages. It was a great day and fun to get out of Rome and into the countryside.

Would Recommend - Maria and Matheo were a wonderful combo. Maria the tour guide and Matheo the driver were down to earth and touched on points of interest along the way to Assisi and Orvieto. I do wish we had a little more time to browse in the towns. Hope to come back one day.

A wonderful day excursion from Rome. - A wonderful tour with just one other couple. Maria was warm and a pleasure. In Assisi she handed over to a local guide who was very well informed. Assisi itself is brilliant. So beautiful. Such an oasis of calm, too, after a week in Rome. A highlight of our trip.

Worth the money. Safe and educational day trip. - This was a fantastic trip. The communication between us and the tour group was good. They responded quickly. Our driver and guide were excellent. We felt very safe and in good hands. The local tour guide in Assisi, Antonella, was spectacular. I would highly recommend this tour. Well worth the cost.

Wasted opportunity - The guide for the walking tour of Orvieto didn’t seem to care if the group (4 people) heard what she shared and Often left half the group behind out of earshot and while talking directly to one tourist instead. Though knowledgeable, she talked too fast to be understood and be able to follow the thread of her storey. We only had radios for the last 15 minutes of the tour. Having the radios for all of it may have helped a lot. During the drive two of us were in the back row of seats where it was hard to follow the conversation because of road noise. The car was electric so we had to stop twice to recharge which during which time the group was left to themselves to find a snack and coffee at the service station store crowded with other travellers. A more organized stop with coffee and food provided to the tour would greatly enhance the experience and be an opportunity to listen to information about our interests in taking the tour to such a significant spiritual place as Assisi. The guide in the car though friendly, helpful and knowledgeable did not have a properly planned talk about the subject of our tour.
