Recognized as a site of natural interest by UNESCO and declared a natural monument by the Government of the Canary Islands, it is part of the Canary Network of Protected Natural Spaces.

Formed by the 1949 eruption of the San Juan Volcano, Cueva de Las Palomas features over 10 openings that allow natural light to filter through at various points along the route. Some of these openings were once fumaroles that emitted lava and hot sulfurous gases during the tube’s formation. The cave measures approximately 3 meters in width and 560 meters in length. Its geological significance is complemented by its biological importance, as it is home to a unique invertebrate fauna.
