Exploring Aruba’s Hidden Treasures: A Day in Arikok National Park
When the call of adventure beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of Aruba’s natural wonders. Join me as I recount my thrilling journey through Arikok National Park, where history, beauty, and excitement await at every turn.
A Bumpy Ride to Remember
The day began with the sun just peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the island. I had signed up for the Arikok Adventure and was eager to explore the natural wonders of Aruba. As a former professional surfer, the call of the ocean and the promise of adventure always draw me in. I met our guides, Rockey and Dre, who were as laid-back and friendly as you’d expect from island locals. They welcomed us with warm smiles and a local breakfast treat called “Pastechi,” which was a delightful way to start the day.
The journey to Arikok National Park was a bit of a rollercoaster, with the rugged terrain making for a bumpy ride. But that’s all part of the charm, isn’t it? The laughter and camaraderie among the group made the jolts and bumps feel like part of the adventure. Rockey and Dre shared fascinating stories and historical tidbits about the sites we were about to visit, adding depth to the experience.
Discovering Hidden Gems
Our first stop was the Quadirikiri Cave, a stunning limestone formation with natural sunholes that illuminated the cave’s interior. The play of light and shadow was mesmerizing, and I couldn’t resist capturing a few shots for my collection. The guides pointed out the best spots for photos, ensuring we didn’t miss a thing.
Next, we ventured to the Fontein Cave, where ancient Caiquetio drawings adorned the walls. It was humbling to stand in a place with such rich history, imagining the lives of those who came before us. The fresh water pond at the cave’s entrance offered a unique “wild fish pedicure,” a ticklish but refreshing experience that left us all giggling.
Dos Playa was our next destination, a hidden gem with pristine white sands and vibrant turquoise waters. The beach was a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the northern coast. The waves crashing against the shore were music to my ears, a reminder of the ocean’s ever-present allure.
The Natural Pool: A Thrill Seeker’s Paradise
The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the Natural Pool, or “Conchi.” Nestled among the rocks, this secluded spot offered a chance to swim, snorkel, and for the daring, cliff jump. As someone who feels at home in the water, I couldn’t resist diving in. The water was cool and inviting, and the thrill of jumping from the rocks was exhilarating.
For those less inclined to swim, there were plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the view, with the option to dip your feet in the water. It was a perfect setting for family photos, capturing the joy and excitement of the day. A word of advice: bring water shoes or something with a good grip, as the rocks can be slippery.
As we made our way back, the wind and warmth dried us off, leaving us with sandy feet and sun-kissed skin. The ride back was filled with laughter and shared stories, a testament to the bonds formed during our adventure. The Arikok Adventure was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of Aruba’s natural beauty, a reminder of the island’s magic and the joy of exploration.
