Waqrapukara Archaeological Site Excursion: Unveil Inca History from Cusco

Waqrapukara is a term in the Quechua language which, when translated to Spanish, signifies Waqra = horn, Pucara = fortress. The locals and insurance bearers also refer to it as Llamapuka, implying that it’s not a horn, but rather the alerted ears of a llama sensing an alien presence.

Demanding, rewarding hike to high altitude citadel - Definitely give yourself some time to adjust to the high elevations before undertaking this hike. That said, pacing yourself in order to enjoy it all is important regardless of physical fitness - this is a demanding activity! Very well worth the awe inspiring landscape, sweeping views and spectacular archaeological sites. Particularly great because the strenuousness means you might get to experience the site all on your own, like we did (although we did the hike during low tourist season). Our guide was available for questions and concerns but personally I appreciated that he didn't spend too much time talking the entire time. A great budget friendly option; food was okay but the entire hike with breaks may take some time, so bring snacks and a lot of water. A relatively long drive for a half-day hike; in my opinion definitely worth it to experience the nature and the citadel.

Wakrapukara - The place is fantastic, but you need to be prepared for a longer than 3 hours trip one way. Is mostly about 4:30 h one way. We were also picked up 50 min late which at 4am in the morning makes a huge difference. The tour guy Akino and the driver were very professional, but the van was originally for 5 people and we were 7 for this tour. So my husband spend 9-10 hours seating on one of the assisting seats which was very uncomfortable and should be used for a long trips! This is all I have to share!

Beautiful, but meager. - The site itself was enrapturing and the hike was beautiful. We spent plenty of time exploring both the site and the landscape. Our tour guide was incredibly kind, funny, and well-informed. Our bus driver was also kind and helpful, and an excellent driver. However, the amenities of the tour were not as described and were generally lacking. There was only one small bottle of water per person for what was ultimately a 16-hour day. This detail was not shared in advance, nor were there stops to purchase water or use the restroom. There was no oxygen assistance available, and we did indeed need to pay s/10 for entry. This was an incredible day, and would have been so much better had there been more consideration for bio breaks and other needs.
