Additional Information

As I (Albert Coffee, vaccinated) guide you through this magical place, where I had the privilege of participating during the 2004 excavation field season, I’ll share what I have gleaned through personal hands-on experience & years of study about ancient Mesoamerica, the legends & wisdom of local people.

I am a graduate of Louisiana State University and federally licensed tour guide. This special tour includes years of documented legends, wisdom & memories of the elders of the ranch communities on and around the historic location. You will hear about each place and its cultural significance as you journey along the path the ancients took to reach the pyramid.

I’ve taken 20,000+ people on tours since the site opened to the public in 2011. My passion is relating information that is just coming to light in an area recently investigated in an enjoyable way. I hope to see you soon.

This is ‘a must do while you’re here…!’

‘An experience that can’t be missed.’

‘Don’t get left behind.’

Impressive from start to finish! - Of all the things we did in SMA, this tour was by far the most unique and educational experience. Albert is engaging, funny, and THE MOST knowledgable guide - not only about the site but about myth and culture. I want to take this tour 5 more times just to soak it all in. The site is gorgeous and the history is fascinating. Plus, you get some exercise and a totally different slice of this part of MEX. And, there are no vendors and very few other tourists... for now. Don't miss it!

Pyramid Tour - Had a great time and enjoyed the history. It was raining and damp, but we had an amazing time. Hopefully, we can visit again after more excavation has been done. The guide spoke spanish and because my spanish is limited I asked her to speak slowly and I'll be able to follow her.

Awesome experience! - I had an amazing time on the Archaeologist-Led Cañada de La Virgen Pyramid Tour! Albert, our guide from Louisiana, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, making the history come alive with his fascinating stories and insights. His expertise and enthusiasm truly enhanced the experience. The walk to the pyramid was manageable, and exploring the pyramid itself was simply awesome!

An expert guide to a wonderful discovery - It was a real treat to explore Canada de la Virgen with an expert, and that is what Albert Coffee is! Filled with facts about this fascinating archeological site since he has been intimately involved with the excavation and exploration. His reputation in town is well deserved. I would repeat this tour anytime.

The guide was exceptional... - The guide was exceptional - extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The walk up at altitude can be a challenge, but the group moved slowly and took breaks. Definitely worth the trip just to learn from the archaeologist.

Not to missed! - Our family had a wonderful time, and the kids have enough information to complete several school projects! Fascinating history of a civilization that has been unknown to most of the world. The tour is a largely unsullied treasure and we highly recommend it.

Canceled on us - We had really been looking forward to this tour and booked and paid for a Tuesday. Not long after, we received a WhatsApp message that they were not available that day (even though it was offered on the calendar). They asked if we could go later in the week but we were already back in the US. We did get our full refund in a week's time. Hopefully, we can plan this again in the future.

Guide was a no-show - We are asked “What were the most memorable parts of your experience?” Well we did not have an “experience” as our guide never showed up at the pick-up location. We had wasted an Uber trip and made numerous attempts to reach our tour operator without a response. We finally heard from him 2.5 hours later - by then we moved on to something else. Upon reading reviews on other sites, this tends to be a trend with Albert Coffee when he does not have enough people sign up for his tours. Save money and headaches - there are other tour operators that are actually reliable and just as knowledgeable of the site. This tour was supposed to be one of the highlights of our trip to SMA, but turned out to be one big disappointment. Viator should remove him from their offerings so this does happen to other vacationers.
