- San Diego - Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Miramar Way, San Diego, California.
During the filming of “Top Gun,” this location was known as Naval Air Station Miramar and served as the backdrop for the flight scenes and flight school. Today, MCAS Miramar offers civilians a chance to witness high-flying military pilots at its annual Miramar Air Show.
- Oceanside - The Graves House (aka “Charlie’s House”) | 250 N. Pacific St. (at Mission Pacific Hotel), Oceanside
This charming seaside cottage with its breathtaking views in San Diego’s North County is memorable at the film’s 42:48 mark, as Maverick rides his motorcycle to the front door, and again at 1:24:51.
The quaint, folk-style Victorian bungalow was constructed in 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves and is one of the oldest homes still standing in Oceanside. In May 2020, the house was relocated down the street to the new Mission Pacific Hotel.
Restored and looking splendid, “Charlie’s House” reopened in May 2022 as a delightful sweets shop called High-Pie. It welcomes visitors daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- San Diego - Kansas City Barbeque | 600 W. Harbor Drive, Embarcadero
This popular sports bar and BBQ restaurant is where Goose (Anthony Edwards) and Maverick (Tom Cruise) jump on the piano to play “Great Balls of Fire” while Carole (Meg Ryan) and Charlie (Kelly McGillis) sing along. If you’re streaming the movie, you can spot this location around the 1:01:37 mark and again at 1:43.
Kansas City Barbeque
The venue is packed with “Top Gun” memorabilia in every corner.
Today, Kansas City Barbeque is brimming with movie memorabilia, including the very same piano, which belongs to the bar owner from childhood. Visitors can even sit at the keys for a fan moment. Pro tip: This famous spot can get busy on weekends, so a weekday visit is recommended.
