Additional Information

Come and enjoy this amazing day trip to Caral, the oldest known civilization in America. It developed around the same time as the ancient Mesopotamian culture, approximately 5000 years ago.

The archaeological site of Caral is one of Peru’s most remarkable ruins. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans about 60 hectares in the arid Supe Valley and was first settled between 2600 BCE and 2000 BCE.

Although initially discovered in 1948, recent excavations at Caral have uncovered an intricate complex of temples, sunken plazas, and some of the world’s largest terraced pyramids. These findings have led archaeologists to consider the possibility that Caral could be the legendary Mother City of ancient civilizations. Now open to the public, the site is celebrated for its well-preserved ruins and fascinating collection of artifacts, including a quipu (a unique knot system) and several musical instruments made from animal bones. Notably, there is no evidence of warfare or weaponry at the site.

Caral day tour from Lima - I had a great time during this Tour and I met some wonderful people. I was the first to be picked up by our driver Juan and our translator Katya at 5:20am. They were punctual and the van was very comfortable. Our group was small, only 4 people total. We arrived at Caral around 10:30am. The last hour of the trip was off road. Once there we waited for a tour guide to become available. The tour was in Spanish but Katya was there to translate into English for us. The site is amazing to discover. After the tour we went to the city of Barranca for lunch. The restaurat and food were great. Then we made a quick stop at the Jesus Christ statue lookout. The trip back took about 4h30 because of traffic. Juan is an excellent and responsible driver and Katya is very nice and helpful. She’s not a tour guide so, there was no narration during the trip to, and back from Caral, but she made sure that the tour went smoothly. The tour operator was quick to answer my questions before the tour.

Authentic History - Visiting this recently uncovered archeological spot was a unique look into the oldest civilisation in the Americas. The site is still being explored, and the ruins had an authentic 'in progress ' feel. Don't expect finished structures; the site is simple, and few people have discovered this unique and mysterious ruin. Our guide Jose was excellent, providing lots of info on the site and many other insights into Peruvian culture.

Great guide, wonderful and significant archeological site - Jose is a gifted guide and wonderful, caring, considerate person. He was knowledgeable, patient and kind even when we weren't being attentive. He took us to a great place for lunch and took care to ensure everyone could order what they wanted. He was a master at scheduling even when the traffic was snarled and stopped. I also felt very safe with our driver Santos. If you want to see ancient ruins that are not swamped by tourists, go with Jose and join this tour. You won't be disappointed.

Caral, historic site - Fascinating site. Not to be missed if you have a free day in Lima. Our guide, Jose, was very informative. The site is large, so wear good sturdy shoes. There is no shade on the site, so wear a hat and/or sunscreen. The driver, Hugo, was amazing as he navigated the crazy traffic in Lima. A fun day.

Excellent day trip to Caral - Jose was a great host and guide for our trip to Caral. He provided good information in an interesting manner, and was good company as well. Caral is definitely a bit of a trek for a day trip from Lima, but well worth it if you have an interest in ancient civilizations. It's mandatory to use the on-site guides for the actual tour of the archeological site, and ours was very knowledgeable. Our driver, Carlos navigated the often chaotic traffic confidently and I felt secure with him at the wheel.

Corral day trip - Great tour guide and driver. Long day trip from Lima. Corral is legitimate as a cultural milestone. Read before you go to understand what happened there.

Positive experience with negative inpact - The professionalism of Viator was commendable. However, the driver's behaviour was quite unprofessional. Despite the cold weather, he refused to turn on the heating and had the air conditioning on full blast with the windows open. This resulted in a stream of wind blowing into my face for three and a half hours, causing me to fall ill.

It would have been... - It would have been perfect had our guide spoken in English. He said he was substituting for an English-speaking guide who was sick. He assumed from my name that I could handle Spanish. I can do a little Spanish but I would have learned and spoken more had the guide been able to converse in English.

Better to travel by yourself if you want to go further north anyway - The team (guide and driver) were great. The excavations were interesting, but are a work in progress. Very long journey and high price for a 1.5 hour tour. We had to skip the Christo because of traffic. Snacks were not offered.

Early Peruvian temples predating the Egyptian Pyramids - Everyone goes to Cusco and Machu Picchu to celebrate the Inca’s brief glory before they were vanquished by the Spanish. Among more than a dozen other significant pre- Inca cultures, Coral, dating back 5,000 years is the must-see for those wanting a fuller perspective on the lost civilizations of Latin America. The excavations are rich, and there is much to see. Our guide, Jose, was deeply knowledgeable and had a solid command of English. Our only reason for not awarding a 5-star rating is that lunch was forty minutes north of the site and consequently completely out of our way; this added an unnecessary eighty minutes to an already long day.
