Great tour. Sophia was... - Great tour. Sophia was our tour guide, and she was amazing. Very informative tour and great way to see the Palenque culture. We had fried fish and a few tours while in Cartagena, but the fish at Palenque was the best ever. Highly recommended to visit.

A Don't Miss Cultural Experience - Our pick up from our hotel was on time and the driver Manuel was nice. Given that the ride from the city to Palenque was about an hour long, He stopped by a gas station so that we could get something to eat and use the restroom. Once in Palenque we were introduced to our host who set expectations, then Sophia and Frey, our young and knowledgeable guides who gave us the history of Palenque and taught us a few words in the native language before we set off for our tour around the community. Our first stop included the dance school where we enjoyed a special dance performance set to the beating our drums. This was also interactive as they invited some of us from the audience to dance along with them. I would suggest bringing pesos or dollars for donations to the school which is collected at the end. Following that performance, we walked throughout the community admiring the arts and murals all around while gaining more insight about the culture. Our next visit was outside of a (home) where one of the community elders make candy, as well as grow plantains and other agriculture. There we had the opportunity to sample and purchase the candy. After this, we also visited the site of a holistic doctor who taught us about the different remedies used for certain ailments. We enjoyed this experience and left with a special blessing over our lives. Now, let me tell you about the included lunch... IT WAS GREAT!! No doubt that the people of Palenque can cook!! The fish, the chicken...all was tasty! I think it was our favorite meal of our entire trip to Cartagena! Our tour ended with us having the opportunity to walk around more of the community. We even got to meet the artist who created the popular Black Lives Matter mural (among others)! He was so nice and even invited us into his music studio! That was a treat! The people of Palenque are so nice and there is so much pride for their African heritage. We really enjoyed learning about the history and culture. If you are Black you'd leave being more proud to be Black but this is a great cultural tour for all ethnicities to experience!

Viktor and his family... - Viktor and his family were amazing hosts. I learned so much about the history of Palenque—it was truly an unforgettable experience, and I gained much more than I anticipated. The food was absolutely delicious, and I only wish I had brought more cash, as there are no ATMs nearby. Everyone we encountered was incredibly kind. One tip: wear comfy shoes, because there’s plenty of walking involved!

Worth the trip if you have a lot of free time - Victor is an expert on Palenque as he grew up there. We learned a lot about the origins of Palenque and the people that live there now. The drive to get there is long and our drive back due to traffic was over 2 hours. Be expected to tip a lot when you are there so bring plenty of pesos. We were surprised that an area that has a lot of tourists everyday was not cleaner. There is a lot of trash which was sad because you would think that the people would take more pride in their home. Victor’s family are all involved as it is a family business.
