Great day at the zoo with family - Spent the day at the San Antonio zoo for the first time while in town visiting with family. Loved seeing the diversity of animals, ranging from small-large mammals, many brilliant birds, and very cool reptiles. I had not been to the SA zoo before, but I have heard from family and other locals it has been greatly improved and can see the results of that—I hope the zoo continues to improve and grow! Staff were very friendly, kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Due to construction of the new exhibit, my family and I got lost a couple of times (probably due to our own error with the map), but staff were very helpful in directing. As well, staff were enthusiastic in sharing about specific animals, which was really appreciated. Did not have small children with us today, but this would be a great place for a family with children and little ones, as there are many activities interspersed throughout the zoo for children. Could easily be an all day experience, especially with kids. Would recommend visiting on a cooler weekday in the morning-early afternoon—I think we saw more animals out and about because of timing!

It left a lot to be desired - First, the parking is almost a block from the entrance. I feel this is very important for people to know so they can drop people off at the entrance before parking. Going into the zoo, I was pleasantly happy with what I was seeing; however, that was short-lived. There were numerous enclosures closed for updates, and lots of enclosures were covered due to I guess the 58-degree temps. I also took note that there were numerous enclosures that had the same animals, just a few enclosures away from each other. I need to mention there were LOTS of birds and not as many varieties of other animals. I was VERY UPSET about the male lion. He looked emanciated and didn't have hair on his body but did have his mane. I feel if an animal is in bad shape, they should be removed from the public to see. Maybe after they get the enclosures finished and the construction completed, it might be nice. It would be nice if the zoo added more variety of animals. I really hope this helps at least one person.

Holiday visit - Expensive to begin with, the facilities look seemingly fine, but are missing MANY animals, empty exhibits and do not inform you before paying to avoid disappointment, if you have the option to skip the visit, do so.

Filthy - We have been to several zoos big and small, San Antonio by far was the filthiest we’ve ever been too. We felt horrible for the animals. No food to feed animals. Also if there was food to feed them they charged you extra to go in the enclosure. So the regular customers could barely see the animals. They were remodeling and the lions were very vocal and you could tell agitated with the noise. It was sad

Over priced and underwhelming! - The SA zoo compared to other zoos is a joke. The price is insane both for the features that they have and in comparison with other zoos. The Dallas zoo has family passes for 4 - 6 - 8 that all come in under 250 a year. The SA zoo has no family passes and just 6 standard passes are over 500. The daily rate starts at 40 where the Dallas zoo tops out at 20 and offers many days for less than that. Next the exhibits at the SA zoo are light and most are an extra fee on top of the 40 to get in.
