Shah-i-Zinda - SHAHI Zinda is a medieval architectural monument in Samarkand, featuring an ensemble of mausoleums belonging to the Karakhanid and Timurid nobility. Until the 16th century, it was known as the Sheikh’s Mazar, referring to Kusam ibn Abbas. Since the 16th century, the complex has been named after the legend Shoh-i Zinda — “the living king.” The legend tells that the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin, Qusam ibn Abbas, came to Samarkand with a small army to establish Islam. During a pagan raid, Kusam ibn Abbas was struck by an arrow but managed to hide from the infidels in a crevice (or, according to another version, in a well), where he is said to live to this day.
Hazrat Khizr Mosque - HAZRATI KHIZR MOSQUE - The mosque’s first mention dates back to the Arab conquest of Sogd in the early 8th century. According to legend, after Kutyiba’s troops captured Samarkand in 712, the Arabs attempted to flood the city fortress (kala) by damming the Jui-Arzis canal. However, a large white bird descended from the sky and destroyed the dam. To commemorate this event, one of Kuteiba’s companions, Muhammad ibn Vasi, built the Hazret-Khizra mosque on the site of a Zoroastrian temple revered by the Sogdians at the southern tip of Afrasiab at the Iron Gate.
Ulugbek Madrasah - SHERDOR MADRASAH is an Islamic educational, spiritual, and memorial building from the 17th century. The Sherdor madrasah was constructed by Samarkand architect Abdulzhabbor between 1619 and 1635/36, commissioned by Samarkand’s specific ruler (hakim) Yalangtush Bahadur.
