Take This One Chance to Really Know Samarkand Inside and Out... - Most of us will only ever get one chance to see, feel, and truly understand this extraordinary city with its rich, beautiful, nuanced, and fast changing history. So choosing the right guide is essential. And amen, I did. Xumora didn't just bring bags of energy and buckets of insight into her hometown. She delivered an infectious enthusiasm that's impossible to fake. By the end of our day together, 2,500 years of history had unfolded before me: from the remarkable frescoes of Afrosiyab, to the tomb of Amir Temur, through the ethereal Blue City of the Dead (Shah i Zinda), and of course, the majestic Registan Square. But perhaps even more captivating? I gained a vivid sense of the city's living pulse from a young local who's woven right into its fabric. She seems to have friends on every corner! Her English was flawless (better than mine, and I'm a native Brit. So fight me on it). She shared intimate stories of daily life under Russian rule, Soviet times, and Uzbekistan's own independence, all delivered by a woman who's also a talented folk dancer, gracing stages at international festivals. My one tiny gripe? She should charge way more. I paid other guides two or three times her fee elsewhere and got far less depth and dodgy English to boot. What a steal for Central Asia's greatest jewel: I found a true connoisseur in Xumora. Book her now. You won't regret it. She's not just a guide. She's the heartbeat of Samarkand.

Walking tour Samarkand - We did the guided tour with Mira, a sweet girl and very prepared and available to give all the necessary information. We also took pictures together with a photographer we met by chance on the street and we had a lot of fun in his company.
