Al Balid Archaeological Site - Known as the most important ancient port on the Arabian Sea and part of the Frankincense Trail, its history dates back to before 2000 BC. Some archaeological research suggests that the city’s prosperity began in the Iron Age. The location of the city was first discovered in 1930.
Currently, the Al-Baleed site combines an open-air archaeological site with the Museum of Frankincense Lands. The museum focuses on two themes with two galleries: one showcasing the historical and archaeological heritage of the Dhofar Governorate, and the other narrating the remarkable maritime history of Dhofar and Oman.
In 2000, Al-Baleed City was registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
