A unique opportunity to tour a World Heritage Site and explore an underrated side of Osaka - Last month, I had the fortune of taking a tour led by Nicolas of the Daisenryo Kofun and other nearby kofun in Sakai, Osaka. As of today, this is still the only guided tour available of the Mozu Kofun Group when you search online, even though this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nicolas has years of previous experience leading tours, but this was his first self-designed tour as a freelancer tour guide and I was happy to be his first customer. He offers flexibility in terms of tour start time, so I opted to start at 11:30am. We started at Sakai City Hall to see a view of the kofun from above ground. Then we walked towards Daisenryo Kofun and walked its perimeter. Although the keyhole shape of the Daisenryo Kofun from above is iconic, I found it much more awe-inspiring to see the various kofun from ground level--they're like mystical forests. I learned about when they were built, who was allegedly buried where, and the symbolism of the shapes. Nicolas answered any questions I had and helped me take photos of myself and of the surroundings. The Mozu Kofun visitor center has an interesting visual display of the kofun group and a gift shop. Daisen Park is simply beautiful and relaxing to walk through, and the tea ceremony makes for a nice midday break. Note that the ceremony for the default tour is short and only the includes the matcha and wagashi as shown in the tour's photo gallery. Overall, the experience was educational and contemplative, a great way to spend a more relaxing morning/afternoon in Osaka. I recommend it as a unique Osaka experience off the beaten path.
