As soon as I arrived at the San Juan Artisan Distillers in Sabana, I was greeted with a tropical welcome drink that set the tone for the day. The cocktail, crafted with the award-winning TRESCLAVOS rum, was a delightful introduction to the flavors of Puerto Rico. Our guide, a passionate storyteller, began with a brief history of Puerto Rican heritage at the Casa Pepón Visitors Center. The stories of the island’s past, intertwined with the art of rum-making, were as rich and vibrant as the drink in my hand.

The distillery, nestled in the coastal town of Vega Alta, is a testament to the island’s dedication to preserving its cultural roots. As someone who spends a lot of time riding the waves and exploring the ocean’s depths, I found a similar sense of connection and respect for nature here. The distillery’s commitment to using locally farmed tropical fruits and heirloom sugarcane varietals resonated with my own appreciation for the island’s natural bounty.

Exploring the Heart of Rum Production

The tour took us through the Aging Bodega and Sugarcane Mill, where the magic of rum production truly comes to life. Walking through the mill, I could almost taste the sweetness of the sugarcane in the air. The guide explained the meticulous process of growing, harvesting, fermenting, and distilling the sugarcane juice, all done on the estate. It was fascinating to see how the French Cognac Pot Stills played a crucial role in creating the unique flavors of their rums.

As we moved into the distillery and production area, I was struck by the blend of tradition and innovation. The San Juan Artisan Distillers have mastered the art of combining age-old techniques with modern technology to produce their award-winning rums. The dedication to quality and craftsmanship was evident in every step of the process. It reminded me of the precision and skill required in surfing, where every wave is an opportunity to create something extraordinary.

The tour concluded back at Casa Pepón with an artisanal rum tasting session that was nothing short of spectacular. Each sip of the RON PEPÓN and TRESCLAVOS Ron Caña was a journey through the island’s rich flavors and traditions. The RON PEPÓN, made entirely from estate sugarcane juice, had a smooth, earthy taste that lingered on the palate. Meanwhile, the TRESCLAVOS Ron Caña, infused with locally farmed tropical fruits, offered a vibrant and refreshing twist.

After the tasting, I took some time to browse the curated gift shop at the visitors center. It was the perfect way to end the day, with a few souvenirs to remind me of this incredible experience. The Rum Distillery Tour was a delightful blend of history, culture, and flavor, much like the island itself.
