Fascinating experience! - The tour of this astonishing landscape of seismic origin steam vents and boiling liquids and mud is fascinating! We liked how the land was left mostly untouched and just safe enough for visitors. I would not take small children who might wander. The mud baths were fun, but we wished there were 2 more pools of different temperatures. Loved the cold waterfall. It could have been kept cleaner.

Amazing must not miss experience - We booked The Hell's Gate Experience from Brisbane as we were having 2 nights in Rotorua and wanted to experience the thermal nature of the region. We were greeted by Kyla (Team Leader) and everything was fully explained to us. Our guide Ngatiroirangi was amazing and knew so much of the area and told us so much about the Māori culture. He had a great sense of humour, told many great tales (including reference to his Grandfather who has clearly had such a big say in Ngatiroirangi raising from a young boy to a most pleasant young man). After the guided tour of 2 hours, we spent an hour and half in the mud/sulphur and plunge pools and felt so rejuvenated. Highly recommend this package. Note the guided tours only operate at 1030 and 1630hrs. Otherwise you can do a self guided tour with a handy map but would miss the fascinating tales and enthusiasm of Ngatiroirangi.

Relaxing time viewing the bubbling pools. - Plan to go early if its sunny, there is very little shade, bring a hat. The grounds are quite large and there is a great amount to see, we just did the tour, but the spa looked good also. Great gift shop and cafe.

Fun, unique experience! - It was the first thing we did after checking into our Rotorua hotel. We arrived a couple minutes passed our allotted window, but they were very understanding and nice about it. Staff was clear in their instructions/recommendations. Wish we had more time in the actual mud bath, as the prep/cleaning in between took more time than I thought. Hot water in the showers and huge towels definitely helped afterwards though. Nonetheless, the mud felt very soothing and relaxing to the skin. Probably not something one needs to do repeatedly, but it certainly for a unique, (probably) once-in-a-lifetime outing. Would recommend as a bucket-list check off :)

Lovely and Warm but not as expected. - Lovely and warm, definitely felt cleansing, But I was expecting it to last. I had heard so many stories of its healing properties, and as an Arthritis sufferer who had been travelling for days, I was led to believe it would provide long term pain relief. It didnt. My skin felt smooth and soft, and the pain was relieved while in the mud and waters, but returned within an hour. I know the minerals were still in my body, cos when I put my jewellery back on 3 hours later, it went black. but the lasting effects werent there.

Great with minor flaws - Guided tour was great and very informative, our mud experience was okay as we didn’t have much mud in the bin. There was a mishap with the transportation from their facility but a quick phone call and they accepted our time slot and let us just push it back and sent the driver to come get us right away. *** rent their towels your hotel will charge you if you use theirs… if you want to take photos buy one of those cheap water proof full plastic cases to keep the stinky sulfur smell and mud off*** Your clothes will smell some after as well. Wash them separately, they give you a card with info on how to wash swim wear and clothing. I just bought a cheap suit and threw it away.

Could have been better - A good few hours but marred by passive aggressive guy in charge of carvings- seems to think humiliating every third guest is sport. Other than that it’s fun in the sun but I would just avoid him.

An overpriced, smelly gravel pit. - This review is for the walk through the thermal park. I can’t speak to the mud bath experience. The park tour is over priced and unexciting. It consists of a 45 minute walk past various bubbling pools that have been given cute names. There is a wood carving gimmick station at the end. After the fourth or fifth pool, the novelty wears off. Basically you’re walking around a very warm, very smelly gravel pit. I think it is worth half the price being charged.

Mud baths Rotorua - Some false advertising about 1 hour mudbath. It is a very short time 20mins in mud baths. Barely enough time to cover with mud, then they tell you to get out!

No - We arrived and it was great! Then the staff got into a huge fight in front of us. Followed by a group that took over the waterfall and we never got a chance to experience this part. Not relaxing or worth the huge amount of money.
