Highlights
  • Museum and Crypt of Capuchins - Your first destination is the Capuchin Crypt. Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate this somber space in intricate floor-to-ceiling designs, lending it the macabre nickname of ‘the Bone Chapel’. Here you will be free to explore hearing all the interesting details and the reasons behind such an unusual practice with your audio guide. Open your eyes to the city’s hidden side – and you’ll never see Rome the same way again.

  • Catacombe di Santa Domitilla - Your expert historian guide will explain how this network of sacred tunnels is associated with the first Christians in ancient Rome. You’ll descend into the labyrinthian corridors carved into the soft volcanic rock and discover the frescoes, strange iconography and burial places which doubled as places of worship when the Christians were persecuted.

  • Basilica di San Nicola in Carcere - When you exit the catacombs, your bus will take you to the Basilica San Nicola in Carcere, where you’ll explore its ruins, descend beneath the altar, and unearth atmospheric remains of ancient temples hidden beneath the church. The historic Forum Holitorium, an ancient market surrounded by Republican-era temples, lies concealed beneath the basilica, adding layers to the city’s rich history.

Very different tour…great! - A really nice tour. Veronica was a fantastic guide. The crypts were amazing. Just wow! I was not expecting that sort of amazing, but really odd and eerie art. We were disappointed in the catacombs, as they were only empty spaces. No skulls, skeletons, etc. but obviously, that’s not the guide’s fault. Still gave you a good feel of the place. The bus between the areas was a lifesaver. It was one of the hottest days of the year, and we were all struggling. That air conditioned bus was amazing, and the guides gave a lot of information on everything we were passing as well. Great tour. Thank you!

Great experience - I thought it was a good experience, our tour guide Veronica was great! A little disappointed there weren’t actual bones in the catacombs, not like the catacombs in Paris!

A very different tour - A different and very interesting tour, taking in the Crypts in the museum of the Capuchin Friars, some catacombs and visiting a church built on top of Roman Temples, the remains of which you can visit underneath the church. Alan was our excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic on the subject of Crypts and Catacombs. The half hour trip on an air-conditioned bus was appreciated on a very hot day.

Excellentc - We really enjoyed the tour. The tour guide Emiliano was really great with tons of passion and humor. He kept us informed and entertained. The bus was nicely air conditioned and clean. The catacom, the Frier Museum and St. Nicolas church, all three locations in the package are great to visit.
