- Domus Aurea - Merely four years after the devastating fire that destroyed two-thirds of the city and claimed thousands of lives, Nero seized the opportunity to expand his palace on the Palatine Hill by constructing the Domus Aurea. Despite this, dissatisfaction among the Romans grew, leading to a decline in the emperor’s popularity and ultimately his suicide in June 68 AD.
Vespasian, the succeeding emperor, chose to construct the Colosseum on the site of Nero’s lake. By providing a venue for the popular gladiator games, he gained the favor of the Romans and distanced himself from the policies of the notorious Nero.
Fifty years later, Emperor Trajan buried Nero’s Golden House beneath a vast bath complex. The Domus Aurea faded into obscurity until it was rediscovered by Renaissance artists in the 1500s. This marked the beginning of the rediscovery of Ancient Rome’s forgotten cultural heritage, which can be explored on our tour.
