- Colosseum - Explore the Colosseum, one of the grandest structures from ancient times, where Romans once gathered for gladiator games, wild beast battles, and, as legend suggests, naval battles. Discover how this enormous stone amphitheater, accommodating around 60,000 spectators, was constructed in just 8 years. Your guide will share intriguing tales about its design and construction, political significance, the fighters, and the eventual cessation of the games at the Colosseum.
- Roman Forum - At the Roman Forum, your guide will illuminate the mythology, popular festivities of the era, and the deities of ancient Rome, which are mirrored in today’s astrological signs. Learn how the pagan festival Saturnalia influenced the celebration of Christmas on December 25th. Hear the story of the Lapis Niger (Latin for ‘black stone’), the oldest Latin text ever found, housed in the foundation of a column in the Forum.
Discover the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, who served in the temple for 30 years under various emperors and were revered almost as goddesses. Their primary duty was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta, symbolizing the heart of Rome. According to legend, as long as the sacred flame burned, Rome would endure and triumph.
- Arch of Constantine - Enjoy the view of Rome’s most significant Triumphal Arch, dedicated to the renowned Emperor Constantine.
This Arch marks a pivotal moment in Roman history and art, symbolizing the transition between the rise of Christianity and the decline of the Roman Empire.
- Tempio di Vesta - The Temple of Vesta (Latin Aedes Vestae; Italian: Tempio di Vesta) is an ancient structure in Rome, Italy, situated in the Roman Forum near the Regia and the House of the Vestal Virgins. The temple is distinguished by its circular design. Since Vesta worship began in private homes, the architecture serves as a historical reminder. The existing temple features Greek architecture with Corinthian columns, marble, and a central cella. The remaining structure suggests there were twenty Corinthian columns on a podium fifteen meters in diameter. The roof likely had a vent at the top for smoke release.
- Piazza del Colosseo - Stroll along this Piazza to access the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.
Nothing has been added since the Roman Empire, so what you see is essentially the same view the Romans had in the past.
- Foro di Cesare - The Forum of Caesar (in Latin, Forum Iulium) is part of the Imperial Forums in Rome, being the first forum of this complex to be constructed.
Construction began in 54 B.C. and was completed in 29 B.C. by Augustus. The Forum of Caesar underwent renovations during Trajan’s time and after the fire in 283 A.D.
Julius Caesar invested vast sums from the Gallic campaign (60 million sesterces according to Cicero, 100 million according to Suetonius) to purchase land, expropriate private property, and demolish buildings in the area, also relocating the Curia.
Julius Caesar instructed Cicero to buy land for the forum’s construction. Roman law was so powerful that even emperors could not override contracts.
- Via dei Fori Imperiali - Admire the view of the renowned Via dei Fori Imperiali, designed under Mussolini’s government.
-
Palatine Hill - Close to the Forum stands the Palatine Hill.
Prepare to climb it for a stunning view of ancient Rome and see the hill that gave birth to Rome, the Eternal City.
