The main floor is primarily dedicated to classical antiquities, including a renowned mosaic of gladiators from 320–30 AD, discovered on the Borghese estate at Torrenova, along the Via Casilina outside Rome, in 1834. It also features classical and neo-classical sculptures like the Venus Victrix. The decorative scheme includes a trompe l’oeil ceiling fresco in the first room, or Salone, by Sicilian artist Mariano Rossi, which uses foreshortening so effectively that it appears almost three-dimensional.
