Easy Going Tour: A 1-hour drive followed by a 300-foot walk from the parking lot brings you to the ancient city of Altun Ha. This site, once the center of Maya civilization’s ceremonial activities 2000 years ago, features plazas and temple pyramids. Excavations have uncovered royal burial tombs filled with artifacts such as jade necklaces, pendants, face masks, stingray spines, monkey skulls, jaguar skin loincloths, manatee bones with inscriptions, and ceramic vessels used for bloodletting rituals and incense burning. Optionally, you can climb the stairs to view the sacrificial altar, where the 1968 excavations revealed animal bones, eccentric flint, and jade objects in a burnt state. From the top of the Sun Temple, you can see the entire kingdom of Altun Ha and reflect on the days of the Classic Maya civilization. The tour then takes a short drive to the “baboon sanctuary,” where a 5-minute walk along the Rainforest jungle trail leads to a family of howler monkeys. The sanctuary is a community effort to preserve the monkey habitat.
