Rochester is a city rich in history and charm. It was the second location settled by Christian missionaries dispatched from Rome by Pope Gregory the Great in 597 AD to convert southern England. The Cathedral here is the second oldest, following Canterbury. However, the Romans had already established a presence, as this was an ideal spot to cross the River Medway, with the bridges still playing a vital role in the city today. In 1066, the arrival of the Normans marked the beginning of the cathedral’s reconstruction and the building of a massive stone castle, second only to the Tower of London. Monarchs have visited the city en route to mainland Europe to escape political unrest and on their return to reclaim their thrones. Henry VIII first met his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, here and also executed one of the city’s most renowned Bishops for not recognizing him as the supreme head of the Church of England. In more recent history, Charles Dickens spent his childhood in Rochester and chose to reside here in his later years.
