Brilliant outing ; Excellent Guide ! - This be a Very longwinded review . Short version :
* Brilliant outing
* Excellent Guide
* Be On Time
What an absolutely brilliant experience ; a great way to spend an afternoon - in jovial good company .
Our tour-guide Abdullah I’ll say is Tour-Guide extraordinaire : thoughtful , considerate , attentive , great humor and full of fascinating information about the history , geology ( he collects fossils ) , fauna , flora , local customs and general knowledge about Saudi Arabia and Riyadh . Not only does he speak perfect English , but offhand able to reference ‘Our’ literature and idioms as it’d relate to the conversation . Plenty of laughs and oh the scenery !
Our scheduled afternoon started at 4pm ( Please be on-time as the Sunset Is on a schedule and to fully enjoy the trip and be able to partake of All of it , we have to get There : on my day a couple of clients had texted our tour guide few minutes before departure that they will be running ten minutes late , our guide asked us - the other guests - if we should wait for the ones running late , if we'd want to wait :: of course we all said to wait and we did : until exactly 4:10pm when the late-running clients still did not arrive : we left the meeting point in Abdullah’s impeccable clean and comfy nearly brand new lux SUV to get to our adventures . : Five minutes later - at 4.15pm - the other clients texted that they’re 3 minutes away from the meeting point .. clearly we already had gone , but they did cause a delay , they missed their trip , and just was not a cool thing to stress the guide and inconvenience the other travelers . So please be on time ! The tour Does leave on-time ) .
Anyhow , back to Our adventure : we set out , beautiful scenery along the drive , clean car , good guide , water and snacks provided , we stopped along the way at a rest stop for everyone’s convenience , and then : the Desert always takes my breath away ! On our drive to our destination Abdullah organized for Camels to meet us ( : for us to meet up with Them rather , as we had to walk a bit of a distance due to us running a bit behind ‘schedule’ and camels are on camel-time :D : nice Little walk , and baby camels ! ) . Photo opportunity with the camels and babies for all who care to take them , for me :: The Mom camels had sort of an apron tied on them which I’ve never seen before , so after asking Abdullah and he talking to the camel ‘shepherd’ , I come to find out it is to prevent the babies from overindulging - which would make them sick . And so the talk veered to camels and their nature and Abdullah had some brilliant stories ( in Arabic there are separate words for : if a camel kicks with her front leg , or kicks with her hind leg ! Also , in Arabic a camel is Never referred to as an ‘it’ : it is always a He or a She . And : In Saudi Arabia they hold a yearly Huge camel Beauty Pageant with millions $ in prize money ! : for further details on That , you’ll just have to visit and ask Abdullah ;) ) .. and then talking about the babies and their nursing I mentioned in passing “I’ve never had camel milk before , could I try ?” . Who would Think that a ‘Tourist’ out of Riyadh would have such a request ! : it was a joy to see Abdullah interacting with the shepherd and it was no problem , and I got to see the ins-n-outs of the Momma-camel-apron and milking such a large ungainly beautiful creature and I ended up having a small bottle of still warm camel milk handed to me . I Love such off the cuff experiences .
/ the milk is Delicious ! Sweet and smooth . Diff from cow’s - better . Try it !
So having had the short adventure and discoveries with the camels , back on the road to our destination : Edge of the World . Breathtaking scenery : the plateau which we drive on , walk on , once upon a time was the bottom of a sea / ocean , and all around us the terrain had been eroded away by millions of years to where we are standing only on a tower of the remaining seabed , precipice all around us . It’s really spectacular . Rugged rugged rocks ,
the distance : desert as far as the eye can see .
It makes you breathe deeper , does something to the soul .
Our guide extraordinaire is an expert drone pilot , and in turn had each of us / couples walk about while he filmed .
The pro footage - a beautiful memento of a brief moment in time in an astonishing spot .
After taking in all the scenery There , we drove onto another site for Sunset : meandering along a comfortable footpath for a short hike ( if you fancy fossils : you just have to look , and Abdullah is more than happy to guide and show ) ; with opportunity for More photos with incredible views as backdrop . Much history and local lore was related by Abdullah along the way .
What a brilliant afternoon / evening ! The desert sunset !
Then slowly we hiked back to the car for the ride back to the city , all of us much pleased with our ‘getting up to’ .
And Still , on the drive back - now in darkness - there were things to see and wonder about , plus the Donkeys !
On way back , Abdullah asked each of us where he could drop us : if it’s on his way he’s more than happy to bypass the pick-up point and drop a guest at a more convenient location . Added bonus !
: Had a great time - highly recommend .

We made only one stop,... - We made only one stop, the guide didn’t give any information / history about the place, barely spoke to us at all. It was like having a driver who just pointed to some places to take photos and showed us where to go. Didn’t help that the weather was bad, but it’s not their fault of course.
