Mauritius is home to nine species of living, endemic birds.

In the late 1950s, species like the Mauritius kestrel, Pink pigeon, and Echo parakeet faced imminent extinction. Although their populations have increased, they are still fighting for survival. In 1974, only four Mauritius kestrels remained, making it the rarest bird on the planet. Today, there are over 350 of these birds in the wild, thanks to a dedicated captive breeding program.
