Duration: 6 hours
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights
  • Fagradalsfjall Volcano Eruptions: 2023, 2022, 2021 - The drive to the eruption side on Reykjanes peninsula leads through old lava fields and gives a first impression of the creation of Iceland and the forming of the landscape in this area.
The Hike begins with an overview of the volcanic history on the Reyjanes peninsula and the first signs of a new eruption at this place. At the lava field, we will discover the forming of new land and learn how the composition of the lava influences the appearance of the rocks. The following hike, up to the crater viewpoint will give you a breathtaking view of the lava field and the surrounding area.
The drive back to Reykjavik leads along hot springs, lakes, and mountains through the beautiful landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula.
A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon, therefore the activity of the eruption can change quickly and the view of hot glowing lava can not be guaranteed.
The hike takes about 1 hour to 1.5 hours in each direction (2 to 3 hours in total).

Volcano hike from a 66 year old lady - The hike was amazing! Learned a lot about the history of volcanoes in Iceland, learned much about the different types of lava, minerals, ash, gases, soil, fissures and much more having to due with volcanoes. You should be in good shape to do this hike and dress warmly with gloves. We hiked to a height about equivalent to over 50 flights of stairs. Be aware you are hiking up loose volcanic rocks and there is no safety net or railing! This is much different from hiking on a flat surface. Our guide was fantastic, very knowledgeable, took enough breaks to explain what was going on around us. We were about 3 miles from the active volcano. We could see the mountain. When you reach the highest point there are many flowering mosses growing on the rocky ground.

Excellent Guide - France was so knowledgeable and a fantastic guide! The lava fields were so cool and we had a great view of where the next eruptions outside Grindavík are supposed to take place. 100% would recommend for anyone who likes hiking, just be prepared for all weather!

Excellent experience - We had an excellent guide called France. She made such an effort to talk to everyone and get us all talking together. She was very knowledgeable, and also sensitive to those of us that were not as fit as others! It was a fabulous view from the top, and so interesting to find out all about the ages and types of lava, and which rocks were formed when.

Wonderful tour, very knowledgeable tour guide - Amazing hike that took us to lava flows from 2021 that still are venting warm air. Our tour guide, France, who is from Australia was incredibly knowledgeable and is an experienced geologist and volcanologist. It’s obvious she enjoys guiding the tours and it was a pleasure to be with her. My daughter who is a rock hound was in heaven on this trip.

Lunch & Lava - Well that was extraordinary. Hiking up to a three year old lava field with the Grindavik volcano erupting constantly in the background! Amazing view of that from on top of the wee mountain you hike up- it is quite a steep hike- be advised. Stand on three year old lava, and feel the heat through the soles of your feet! Our young geologist guide- Giuseppe - is very enthusiastic about his subject, and geology and volcanoes are obviously a passion for him which showed through. Thanks to all- that was more amazing than I thought - now seen an erupting volcano with these eyes!! For me that was a life ambition, now fulfilled. Still quite jazzed by the experience. Hope those who follow enjoy it the same.

Superior experience - Due to weather we were offer the alternative of hiking in a lava tunnel with a Geologist. France picked us up at the agreed upon time and location. She was fantastic, interesting conversation, plenty of details and information as well as knowledge of the area, very experienced and conscious tour guide. Absolutely elevated experience and great communication with the tour operator. Well done France and Jasmin. Thank you.

Great experience hiking on the volcano - We had a great volcano hike. Our guide, Giuseppi , was passionate and knowledgeable. We got some good exercise without it being too strenuous and got some great views from the top. Hiking in a lava field was like hiking on another planet, then we found a crack that was still warm 2 years after the lava stopped flowing. Other times, it seemed more like hiking on the moon or Mars. One minor problem: bathroom at the base camp parking lot was closed. We had a lots of fun!
