Fagradalsfjall Volcano Eruptions: 2023, 2022, 2021 - The drive to the eruption side on Reykjanes peninsula leads through old lava fields and gives a first impression of the creation of Iceland and the forming of the landscape in this area.
The Hike begins with an overview of the volcanic history on the Reyjanes peninsula and the first signs of a new eruption at this place. At the lava field, we will discover the forming of new land and learn how the composition of the lava influences the appearance of the rocks. The following hike, up to the crater viewpoint will give you a breathtaking view of the lava field and the surrounding area.
The drive back to Reykjavik leads along hot springs, lakes, and mountains through the beautiful landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula.
A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon, therefore the activity of the eruption can change quickly and the view of hot glowing lava can not be guaranteed.
The hike takes about 1 hour to 1.5 hours in each direction (2 to 3 hours in total).

Educational and enjoyable - A fascinating trip. Guiseppe our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us a real insight into the current geological activity. He is a great communicator and made sure everyone in the group was looked after. Although it was snowy, the hike was reasonably easy for anyone of average fitness. I learned a lot, saw wonderful views and thoroughly enjoyed the experience

Amazing time with a geologist. - Giuseppe our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and energetic. We loved our time with him. It was so nice to be out and about walking around instead of sitting on a bus for long stretches of time between stops. Be ready to walk a lot - dress warmly and bring crampons if you have them - they do help. Fabulous day.

Volcano hike - Great trip with a great guide (France). Lots of information on the geology and some great views/photo opportunities. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone with even the slightest interst in geology.

Amazing experience! Highly recommend - Amazing experience! Tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Great day for seeing the volcano with the clear weather. Would highly recommend going if you’re in Iceland, amazing day. Tour guide took you very close to the volcano so it’s definitely worth it if you’re interested in exploring. It’s a longer walk but it doesn’t feel too hard as you get stops on the way up for explanations and picture taking. Thank you for a great day really enjoyed it :)

An awesome experience !!! - I happened to be there during the November eruption and went on the tour with Giuseppe as the guide. It was a small group and it was perfect <3 We managed to get a great view of the eruption and Giuseppe (volcanologist from Italy) explained how volcan works.

Great hike! - This was a great, small excursion with a fantastic geological expert. It was about a 5 km hike roundtrip and was steep in some areas. Very doable but could be a little challenging for some. Highly recommended to see inactive but warm lava flows and great views from top.

Simply Amazing - Highly recommended. We took our tour 30.11.2024. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and explained everything about volcanos, lava flows and everything in between. To my surprise, he took us fairly close to the erupting volcano (safe distance obviously) but close enough where we could smell and see the boiling lava inside of the erupting volcano, and the lava flow. It was amazing. I am really glad we booked this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat.
From the parking lot we hiked about 1.5 hours to the site and 1.5 back. The hike is easy, but you do have to be prepared for the weather. when we hiked the temp was about -8 Celsius with 30 km per hour winds, but the views were definitely worth it. as long as you have layers of clothing and something to cover your face it's not bad at all.

Small group, almost one on one experience. The picture opportunities were amazing.

Volcano Hike - Booked the tour several days before the eruption occurred on Wednesday 20th November. What luck! This was a small group with geologist France. A fantastic hike and great view of the eruption. Learnt a lot about the geology of the area and in particular lavas. Truly an experience to remember.

Hike through the mist to beautiful lava fields - Firstly would like to thank France she was a fantastic guide and clearly at the top of her field in geology. If you know Iceland then you know what the weather is like. The first half of the hike was in mist and sleet. But clearly can’t be helped,France made a great job of making up for what we couldn’t see with her knowledge of the surrounding geological formations. But when we reached the top wow the lava fields were amazing and the scenery stunning. I would gladly recommend this trip anyone interested in geology or even just hiking in the beautiful scenery of Iceland. Thanks, myself and my wife had a great time.
