- Reykjavik - Embark on an exciting super jeep safari to one of Iceland’s most stunning spots: Landmannalaugar!
This geothermal paradise, tucked away in Iceland’s remote Highlands, features a diverse array of landscapes, from colorful lava fields and captivating Rhyolite mountains to steaming hot vents and tranquil crater lakes.
Your memorable adventure starts with a convenient pick-up from your selected location. From there, we’ll journey south, passing through some of Iceland’s most picturesque scenery to begin our super jeep safari.
- Hjalparfoss - Located in South Iceland at the edge of the highlands, Hjálparfoss, or Help’s Falls, is a beautiful waterfall in the Fossá river within the Þjórsárdalur valley. The waterfall’s name, derived from the word “Hjálp” meaning “help,” reflects its role as a welcome oasis for travelers crossing Iceland’s barren highlands.
The waterfall splits into two streams with a lovely pond in front, surrounded by extraordinary basalt rock formations, creating a picturesque haven. Hjálparfoss flows in the Fossá river just before it merges with the glacial river Þjórsá.
The contrast between a freshwater river like Fossá and a glacial river like Þjórsá is significant. Glacial rivers are greyish-white and powerful, filled with sediment from glacial erosion. In contrast, Iceland’s freshwater rivers are known for their beautiful, crisp blue hue, perfectly exemplified at Hjálparfoss.
- Sigoldufoss - As we enter Iceland’s Highlands, we’ll stop at Sigöldufoss, a remarkable waterfall on the Tungnaá river. Standing at an impressive 10 meters high, Sigöldufoss is a stunning sight.
A few decades ago, this waterfall was part of the glacial river Tungnaá, with vast amounts of glacial water rushing downstream, turning it a muddy grey due to sediment. However, the construction of the Sigalda Power Plant diverted the glacial water to drive hydroelectric turbines, leaving behind a smaller river of clear spring water.
This change transformed the waterfall’s color from grey to a striking turquoise. While the former waterfall was impressive with its vast volume falling six meters, many believe Sigöldufoss is even more beautiful today.
- Landmannalaugar - We’ll continue our adventure into the Highlands via mountain roads, crossing rivers and rugged terrain effortlessly in our super jeep. Soon, we’ll arrive at Landmannalaugar, or the “People’s Pools,” a vast area of stunning and unique beauty in the heart of Iceland’s southern Highlands.
Landmannalaugar is famous for its vibrant, multi-colored rhyolite mountains and geothermal hot springs. This breathtaking destination offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bathing in natural hot springs, and exploring lava fields and obsidian caves. Prepare to immerse yourself in one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes!
Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the area on a short hike or, if you prefer, to relax in the geothermal waters with a soothing dip in the hot spring.
- Ljotipollur Lake - Ljótipollur, an explosion crater and crater lake in the Icelandic Highlands, reaches depths of around 150 meters. Despite its name, which translates to “ugly puddle,” this crater lake is anything but unattractive. Surrounded by vibrant red and green hills, Ljótipollur offers a stunning contrast that makes it a true photographer’s paradise.
The striking red and green colors are due to iron and sulfur deposits in the rocks and soil, contributing to the area’s distinctive and unforgettable landscape.
- Volcano Hekla - Hekla is one of Iceland’s most explosive and unpredictable volcanoes. Since Iceland’s settlement, Hekla has erupted between twenty to thirty times and remains active today.
Situated along a 40-kilometer (25-mile) rift, the most active segment, Heklugjá, lies directly beneath the volcano itself. Hekla’s summit features numerous craters, with two being particularly prone to eruptions.
Some of Hekla’s eruptions have been so massive that the resulting ash altered the climate of the northern hemisphere for years. Astonishingly, about 10 percent of Iceland’s landmass has been shaped by lava flows from Hekla.
During our journey, we’ll stop nearby for a photo opportunity and to take in the awe-inspiring view of this mighty volcano.
- Reykjavik - We’ll then head back towards Reykjavík for an evening arrival, where your guide will drop you off at your chosen location.
