Glide Through Reykjavík: A Segway Adventure

When I heard about the Reykjavik Segway Tour, I knew it was a must-try. As a lover of urban landscapes and hidden gems, I was eager to glide through Reykjavík’s scenic highlights and uncover its secrets.

Gliding Through Reykjavík: A Segway Adventure

Reykjavík, with its blend of modernity and history, has always been a city that intrigues me. As a former city planner turned travel writer, I have a penchant for urban landscapes and hidden gems. So, when I heard about the Reykjavik Segway Tour—a two-hour glide through the city’s scenic highlights—I knew it was an experience I couldn’t pass up.

The Start of an Urban Adventure

The day began with a crisp chill in the air, typical of Reykjavík’s unpredictable weather. As I arrived at the meeting point, I was greeted by George, our guide for the day. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his knowledge of the city was evident from the get-go. After a quick safety briefing and a short skills test, we were ready to embark on our Segway journey.

Our first stop was the old town area, where we made a brief indoor visit to the City Hall. Here, George introduced us to a massive 3D topographical map of Iceland, providing a fascinating overview of the country’s geography and history. It was a perfect introduction to the city, setting the stage for the sights to come.

Discovering Reykjavík’s Hidden Gems

As we glided through the streets, George’s narrative brought the city to life. We visited iconic landmarks like the Harpa Concert Hall and the Hallgrimskirkja, but it was the lesser-known spots that truly captivated me. George led us to hidden statue parks and historic sites, including the building where Reagan and Gorbachev met in 1986.

One of the most intriguing stops was a site where women of Reykjavík once gathered to do laundry and exchange news—a tradition that continued until 1973. Today, the hot spring water from this site feeds a community swimming pool, a testament to the city’s innovative use of natural resources.

Capturing Memories in Motion

Despite the chilly temperatures, George’s vibrant personality kept us warm and engaged. His skills as a photographer were an unexpected bonus. Every stop was an opportunity for a photo shoot, with George expertly capturing moments from various angles. The photos he took on my phone are now cherished mementos of an unforgettable day.

As we concluded our nearly nine-mile journey, I couldn’t help but reflect on the unique perspective the Segway tour offered. It was a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure, all experienced from the vantage point of a Segway. For anyone looking to explore Reykjavík in a fun and engaging way, this tour is a must-do. Tak Tak, George, for an incredible experience!
