Highlights
  • Troll Expeditions - Pick up from your accommodation or closest bus stop in Reykjavík. The pick up can take up to half an hour.
  • Borgarnes - On the way to Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we will pass a wonderful little town called Borgarnes. The journey to this place is absolutely phenomenal – we will drive through a fjord and many scenic mountains. Borgarnes was one of the first places Norwegian Vikings settled when they arrived in Iceland.
  • Ytri Tunga Beach - Ytri-Tunga is a sandy beach that has a little secret hidden away down by the sea, behind the farmhouses… a seal colony! Seals love to spend their time on the rocks of this beautiful beach. They are friendly and curious and will climb up on the rocks for you to spot them from a distance.
  • Búðakirkja - On the south coast of the peninsula, there’s a village with only a hotel and a tiny black church called the Búdakirkja that sits alone among a field of lava rocks. Búdakirkja was built on the spot in 1703 and reconstructed in 1987 after a claim by a single member that lobbied to have it back. It has an historic graveyard, a bell and chalice from the time it was erected. It is a listed building, owned by the National Museum of Iceland, but it is in the care of the Búdir parish. Without a doubt, this picturesque chapel has a romantic air about it and is a real attraction to the site
  • Arnarstapi - Arnarstapi: Fishing Village-

Our next stop is a small fishing village at the bottom of a mountain, with one of the most beautiful harbors in the country.

This tiny fishing village has picturesque coastal cliffs which derived from glowing magma, hit by the wild waves of the Atlantic. Thousands of years later, erosion has formed beautiful stone arches and a remarkable marine geyser.

We will visit the coastline as we share some extremely fascinating stories about Bárður, the half-man half-troll, and his stories in the area.

Afterwards we will stop at a beautiful Gatklettur, also known as “Hellnar Arch”.

Gatklettur is a beautiful naturally formed stone arch. Gatklettur is a spectacular place for photographers, and videographers.

  • Djupalonssandur Beach - A beach of black volcanic sand and stones where for centuries Icelandic fishermen rowed out to the fertile fishing grounds of the Atlantic ocean. Still today we find the so-called “lifting stones” which fishermen of yore used to test out their strength and prove themselves worthy of the physically straining life of Atlantic rowboat fishing. You can try to lift them yourself! In 1948 a British fishing trawler stranded on the sand reefs of Djúpalónssandur. Five men perished while 14 were rescued by local rescue squads. The remains of the ship are still there, strewn across the beach as an eerie reminder of the awesome power of nature.
  • Londrangar Basalt Cliffs - The Lóndrangar are a pair of rock pinnacles in Iceland and are remnants from a bigger crater which has mostly eroded away. Looming over the entire southern coastline, Lóndrangar, a set of 75-meter high basalt pinnacles set the tone for what’s to come. They host a variety of seabirds, northern fulmars and puffins, and others.
  • Kirkjufell Mountain - This iconic narrow mountain has become the landmark of Snæfellsnes in recent years. It became famous after being presented as the “Arrowhead Mountain” on Game of Thrones. The erosive powers of the glaciers during the last ice age about 12,000 years ago gave this mountain its shape. Due to this unique look, it is one of the most photographed sights in Iceland.

Amazing guide for an amazing day trip - Iceland is amazing. But you already know this. So, I just want to say some words about our guide: Corina is professional and also fun. She offered the necessary informations and more than this. She organized the tour beautifully and turned a rainy day into a glorious one. Thank you, Corina!

Beautiful scenery. - A long day but worth it for the beautiful scenery. Our guide was friendly and very informative, lots of facts on history and geography, but also insights on Icelandic life. We saw a few seals on the rocky beach (you might get your feet wet walking out).

Wonderful day tour to the beautiful Snaefellsnes Peninsula! - I had an excellent tour to Snaefellsnes Peninsula with Tröll Expeditions! I booked this tour after reading many positive reviews of the company on TripAdvisor. Today, I am writing my own account, which confirms the positive experience of other travellers. Communication about the collection point and time were very clear and were sent in a reminder email two days prior! Highly professional and cordial staff working at the office, they were a real pleasure to correspond with! I was collected at 8:15am, and after picking up a few more guests, we were on our way. They do warn in the trip notes that collection times can take up to 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, but I was collected swiftly, with little wait time. I was warned to dress warmly, which I did! It was cold and windy, even in the summer months. You can rent warm wear and rain gear from them at a cost, if you don’t have warm or wind/rain proof clothing. We were a group of approximately 15-16, in a comfortable mini bus. The bus was new, very tidy, and had air conditioning/heating as well as overhead USB chargers for your phone. We proceeded to drive 2.5 hours to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, which is in the northwest direction from Reykjavik. About 1-1.5 hours into the drive, we stopped at a cafe to use the toilet and purchase drinks, coffee and snacks for the day. We arrived on the Peninsula at around 11am, if I recall correctly! From there, we drove the entire circular route of the Peninsula, making stops at scenic viewpoints along the way. The viewpoints we stopped at included: the black church, a viewpoint of the cliffs and the two trolls kissing, the rocks that resemble a sailing ship, a black pebble/sand beach where we were afforded spectacular views of the glaciers, a waterfall that you could go behind (really cool!), and most importantly, Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in all of Iceland! We were blessed with beautiful sunny skies when we reached the highlight of the tour - Kirkjufell and the two waterfalls. The light was perfect and afforded us beautiful scenery! This was the highlight of the day trip! I felt that some of the viewpoints were a little rushed, but I also preferred to see many different viewpoints with less time at each as opposed to visiting two or three with more time. Our guide, Siggi, was just awesome! Informative, professional, personable and easy to talk to! He had a great sense of humour! He was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had on a group tour. During the tour, he even handed out to each of us Iceland’s most famous chocolate bar (Hraun) to sample! It was delicious and I will be purchasing a few to bring home! He was a wonderful driver, prioritized our safety and security, and made sure everyone was on board at all times. At one point, one of our group members was 20 minutes late to meet our van at one of the viewpoints. Siggi circled the area looking for him, and expressed concern about where he could have gone. Finally, he was able to reach him by phone and we located him. Siggi had a lot of funny personal annecdotes to share about what life is like in Iceland, and was equally keen to learn about his clients! I really enjoyed learning about Icelandic culture and traditions during my tour. He had great energy - his favourite phrases “let’s rock and roll” were heard throughout the day. He made the tour really fun for everyone! I hope this review is shared with him at some point so he comes to understand how much travellers appreciate his enthusing and passion about his work! I had a really great tour overall! We saw far many more attractions than I had anticipated we would, so I was pleasantly surprised! We made two stops on the way back to Reykjavik, one for the toilet and one to purchase snacks and cold drinks. We arrived back at our respective collection spots before 6pm, depending on the order of drop-off. Just a word of warning that the roads are bumpy on the Peninsula. It’s very practical and sensible (it’s also law in Iceland) to wear your seatbelt. Siggi made sure we buckled up! Otherwise, the drive was great! The tour was really wonderful! I felt that for everything we were able to see, it was great value! I would absolutely book another day tour or extended tour with this company if I return to Iceland in the near future! Thank you very much to the office staff and guide Siggi for coordinating such a fantastic tour!

Top Tour Out Of Reykjavik - This was the coolest tour I took out of Reykjavik. The views were amazing, decent time to stop and enjoy them, plenty of bathroom/coffee/snack breaks & the small bus and small group made it easier to get on and off and get to the good viewing sites. Our tour guide, Jon, was a funny and full of info about our tour and Iceland, and he was a good driver. Definitely worth it. The views of the mountains, glacier and ocean from the bus alone were worth it, and we got out at quite a few stops. Also we got to watch seals sunbathing and playing. So cool.

Your time spent in traveling is worth it. - Bring a binocular if you want to see the seal up close, this is also the time to flex your expensive camera lens because it will serve its purpose. Bring a lot of patience in travel time because this is a national park and so the locations are scattered around the area. For me, the highlight of this trip is the lava field filled with moss- amazing!! and the perfect Kirkjufell Mountain - kidding aside, because of its perfect shape it seems that the Zoldyck family lives at the top of this mountain lol.

Bad weather puts a damper on the excursion - Unfortunately, the weather was terrible. Very high winds. We were told they were 27 meters/sec. We could get out of the van to take some photos at risk of being totally soaked. Very disappointing but this has nothing to do with Jon. The weather was out of his control.

Uncomfortable ride - The van was too hot. Numerous passengers asked the driver to turn on the AC. Very uncomfortable ride throughout the entire tour.
