The Jewish tour of Recife and Olinda offers a unique opportunity for those eager to explore the history of Jews and new Christians in Recife, Pernambuco during the 16th and 17th centuries. A knowledgeable historian will guide participants through the key sites of Jewish heritage in Brazil. Participants will gain insights into the colonial economy, the socio-religious culture of the Brazilian people, and the European conflicts that led Portuguese Jews to migrate from the Netherlands in the 17th century.
In Olinda, visitors will explore significant churches, markets, and streets from the colonial era, as well as discover the main remnants of the Marrano presence in Brazil during the 16th century. In Recife, the tour will focus on the historic center, where the Jewish community was predominantly located during the Dutch period of the 17th century, and will include a visit to the first public synagogue in the Americas.
