What makes this road truly unique and memorable is not only the abundance of curves and the surrounding beauty but also the architectural features along the way. These include wooden structures known as pigtail bridges and one-lane tunnels, which were constructed to highlight the American patriotic symbol, Mt. Rushmore. These tunnels frame Mt. During a government shutdown, Mount Rushmore remains open to visitors, but all National Park Service (NPS) services are halted. The impact can differ depending on the shutdown’s specifics, but past events offer a clear precedent for expectations.

Concessionaire operations: Third-party vendors, such as Xanterra, who manage facilities like restaurants and gift shops, may continue to operate and offer limited services, including restrooms. These privately-run services are not impacted by the government shutdown.

State funding: In previous shutdowns, the state of South Dakota and private donors have provided funding to keep the memorial open and restore some services. In a 2023 budget standoff, South Dakota officials reached an agreement with the NPS to keep certain areas open.
