- Custer State Park - Custer State Park boasts one of the largest American bison herds globally. The annual roundup ensures the herd size aligns with the land and resources available. Most bison return to their home, the grasslands of Custer State Park.
This event takes place annually on the last Friday of September, lasting for just one day.
Park Rangers guide approximately 1,400 bison from their summer pastures into corrals. This process helps manage the herd, identify calves, and maintain the animals’ health and well-being. It also offers visitors a chance to experience traditional cowboy culture and observe the movement of the large herd.
Once in the corrals, park staff sort 200-500 animals for sale, vaccinate new herd members, brand the new calves, and check the cows for pregnancy. The entire herd is processed over about four days.

Experience the ground shake as over 1,400 American buffalo thunder through the valley. During the annual Buffalo Roundup, skilled herdsmen on horseback guide them over the ridge, down the hill, and into corrals for sorting.
The Custer State herd will pass just a few hundred feet from your vantage point. Custer State Park boasts one of the largest American bison herds globally. The annual roundup ensures the population remains balanced with the land and resources available.
6:10am Pickup in Rapid City
6:50am Pickup at Hermosa
7:30am Arrive at South Lot (No Waiting!)

11:00am Concludes with Bison in Corrals
