Seljalandsfoss - Seljalandsfoss is a powerful waterfall on the south coast with a dramatic 60-meter (197 feet) drop. This incredible waterfall has a unique structure, with cliffs behind it forming a wide cavern, allowing visitors to walk all the way around it from behind.
-
Skógafoss - Skógafoss, meaning “forest waterfall” in Icelandic, is one of Iceland’s tallest and most beautiful waterfalls, featuring a dramatic 60-meter (197 feet) drop. It is one of the few waterfalls that can be viewed from both the top and the bottom.
A unique feature of Skógafoss is that you can climb to the top of the hill where the waterfall cascades down, via 527 steps. From there, you can see how the waterfall forms and enjoy a beautiful view over it.
The land near the waterfall is very flat, making it easy for everyone to get close to this natural wonder, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- Solheimajokull Glacier - The magnificent Sólheimajökull glacier, or “Sun Home Glacier” in Icelandic, is a sight to behold. We will walk to the glacier, pass the glacial lagoon, and stop in front of the glacier, close enough to almost touch the green, blue, shiny ice-cold icebergs.
Sólheimajökull is one of Iceland’s most beautiful outlet glaciers, but it is melting fast like many others, so enjoy it while you can.
- Reynisfjara Beach - Reynisfjara, also known as the Black Sand Beach, is the most famous black sand beach in Iceland, formed from volcanic eruptions that eroded the lava over thousands and millions of years.
At the Black Sand Beach, you will also see amazing basalt columns. These columns have a unique shape due to the way the lava cools slowly and cracks. It is rare to find basalt columns like these anywhere else in the world.
- Dyrholaey - Dyrhólaey, meaning “Door Hill Island,” is one of the best viewpoints over the South Coast. On a clear day, you can see the Eyjafjalljökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers on one side and the Black Sand Beach on the other. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean on either side try to erode the land away. Regardless of the weather, a visit here showcases Iceland’s nature in its purest form.
In summer, this is one of the best places in Iceland to see puffins up close while they visit.
- Gígjagjá - The Hjörleifshöfði cave, also known as the “Yoda cave,” is a great extra stop near the village of Vík. We will drive on the black volcanic sand to the cave. Whether you are a Star Wars fan or not, the unique shape of the door is fun for everyone to see.
Note: In winter, this stop may be canceled if there is heavy snow on the track.
- Vik - The charming village of Vík is a must-see when traveling the South Coast of Iceland. It is the southernmost town in Iceland and the only one without a harbor. You will understand why when we stop by the local church, which also offers a beautiful viewpoint over the village and the Reynisdranger Sea Cliffs.
