Mountain Biking Adventure in Quito / Green and Blue Trails
Teleférico Downhill and Equator Line Exploration / Blue and Black Trails
TeleferiQo Teleferico Quito - We will take the Teleférico “Cable Car” to ascend near the volcano’s crater, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Quito and the surrounding volcanoes. At the summit, we will embark on an exhilarating descent along high-altitude single tracks, featuring grassy landscapes, small jumps, and steeper sections leading into a native Andean forest. The trails transition into smooth paths through forests of towering pine and eucalyptus trees. The short yet thrilling route can be repeated if the group desires more excitement!
In the afternoon, we will travel north into the Ecuadorian highlands, pausing for a traditional lunch to savor local cuisine. Our next stop will be at the equator line, where we will learn about its historical importance to ancient civilizations. By late afternoon, we will arrive at our guest house to unwind after an adventurous day, concluding with a delightful homemade dinner showcasing regional flavors.
Northern Andes and El Chota Valley Adventure / Blue and Black Trails
Ibarra - Today, we will drive to Ecuador’s Northern Andes. Weather permitting, we will enjoy stunning views of the Cayambe and Imbabura volcanoes, with cultural insights from our guides. Our ride begins in the unique paramo ecosystem, offering scenic views of the Yaguarcocha lagoon and fast, flowing single tracks past farms. Transitioning to El Chota’s arid valley, we will experience a dramatic shift in landscape from lush greenery to dry terrain filled with cacti and agave. We will tackle technical trails with loose rocks and steep sections, adjusted for the group’s skill level. The ride concludes in the lower part of El Chota Valley, home to the Afro-Ecuadorian community. We will visit a local artisan workshop to learn about their craftsmanship and cultural traditions. In the afternoon, we will return to the guest house and participate in a cooking class using local products with our family host.
Papallacta Hot Springs & Spa
Termas de Papallacta - Today combines culture and relaxation, starting with a visit to the renowned Otavalo indigenous market, one of the largest in South America. Here, you will find vibrant handicrafts, textiles, and traditional artwork made by local artisans, all within a lively and aromatic atmosphere. Later, we will head to the Papallacta hot springs spa, where you can relax in natural thermal waters surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. This tranquil environment offers various therapeutic pools, with optional spa treatments available for those seeking extra relaxation. Later, we will travel by car to a charming hacienda near the impressive Cotopaxi Volcano, enjoying breathtaking landscapes along the way. As evening approaches, we will gather for a social hour by the fireplace, where you can enjoy a selection of wine and other drinks while sharing stories and reflecting on the day’s experiences, providing a perfect opportunity to connect with fellow travelers.
Cotopaxi Volcano Trails / Blue and Black Trails
Cotopaxi National Park - Today, we explore Cotopaxi National Park, home to one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, Cotopaxi, standing at 19,347 feet (5,897 meters). This biodiverse reserve shelters a wide range of wildlife, including bulls, horses, foxes, and condors, making it a fantastic destination for nature enthusiasts. We will drive to the 15,000 ft trailhead, then bike down sandy volcanic slopes with options to shuttle up for repeat rides. Please note that access to certain trails depends on seasonal conditions and decisions made by the reserve authorities. If trails are closed, we will head to the nearby Cotopaxi Bike Park, which offers a variety of smooth trails suitable for different skill levels, ensuring everyone has a great time. Depending on the group’s preferences, there is an opportunity to shuttle back up a couple of times to experience more exhilarating rides down these picturesque trails. Afterwards, we continue to a historic hacienda, where we will spend the night.
Chimborazo Iceman Trail / Blue and Black Trails
Volcan Chimborazo - Today, we journey to Chimborazo Reserve, home to the towering Chimborazo Volcano—the closest point on Earth to the sun. Reaching nearly 16,000 feet, the highest elevation of our trip, we will enjoy breathtaking views before starting our biking adventure. Depending on the season, we will ride through sandy or snowy trails for a thrilling descent. We will follow the Iceman Trails, named after locals who collect and sell ice from the volcano using donkeys—a fascinating cultural tradition. Surrounded by stunning Central Andes landscapes and volcanic farmland (which produces 40% of Ecuador’s vegetables), we will bike through rocky paths and smooth singletracks with views of deep canyons. Our day ends at a cozy mountain lodge, where we will craft our own pizzas with fresh, local ingredients—a delicious and memorable way to connect with local culture.
