- Plaza de la Independencia (Plaza Grande) - Begin your day by exploring the lively streets and squares of the largest historical center in the Americas, embarking on a unique sensory adventure. Together, we’ll uncover the traditions, history, and local life of this captivating city.
Our route takes us along the street of the seven crosses, where you’ll enjoy views of old colonial houses and church facades before arriving at Quito’s main square, known as Independence Square, home to the Government Palace.
- Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania - Delve deeper into Quito’s heart, passing historic buildings made of volcanic stone. The breathtaking views of the sculpted Compania Church are only surpassed by its gold-covered interiors.
To learn more about this and other churches, we’ll visit the workshops of master craftsmen from “The Escuela Quiteña.” These artists preserve the secrets of colonial art found in Quito’s churches and museums. They have restored altars and paintings in these historic churches. Here, you’ll discover their secrets and even try your hand at creating your own crafts.
- Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco - As we continue through these historic streets, we’ll meet a local family that makes traditional sweets called colaciones.
Nearby, at Plaza San Francisco, you’ll find the Church and Convent of San Francisco, part of the City of Quito World Heritage Site, the first site ever inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1978. It is the oldest and most significant religious site in Ecuador. The vast complex includes 13 cloisters, three churches, a plaza, more than 3,500 works of religious art, and a library holding thousands of books and historic documents. The convent was built by Brother Jodoco Ricke for the Order of the Franciscan Monks between 1537 and 1560. The main church, an imposing baroque structure, was completed a century later, along with additional cloisters.
Today, the complex continues to house Franciscan monks but also functions as a major cultural and religious center, attracting nearly one million visitors annually.
- Calle de las Siete Cruces - The Street of the 7 Crosses is one of the city’s iconic areas within the UNESCO heritage zone. Quito’s Old Town is home to hundreds of artists, artisans, and local experts. We’ll visit several artisan workshops and meet living icons of Quito’s cultural scene. Your guide will tailor your cultural interactions to your preferences, whether you’re a foodie, culture buff, music enthusiast, art connoisseur, aroma seeker, photographer, or have other travel interests. We’ll pair you with local experts accordingly.
- Calle La Ronda - Our next stop is La Ronda, a historic and bohemian neighborhood. This traditional street is known for its art, crafts, gastronomy, and vibrant atmosphere. It is also the oldest street in Quito.
Here, we’ll visit a traditional coffee shop to sample unique ice cream flavors or a traditional sweet, depending on the weather.
- El Panecillo - Finally, you’ll visit the “Panecillo” hillside, offering breathtaking views of the old and modern city, surrounded by the rolling Andes Mountains. At the top stands one of Quito’s most iconic monuments: the Panecillo Virgin. Made of nearly seven thousand pieces of aluminum, this representation is unique for its wings, making it the only winged Virgin Mary statue in the world.
- Quito Old Town - We’ll uncover many hidden gems throughout Quito’s old town.
