The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the Caribbean as I set out on a new adventure, this time trading my surfboard for a taste of the island’s rich history. The Ron Barcelo Anejo Experience in Quisqueya promised a deep dive into the world of rum, and I was eager to explore the distilling process of what many call the world’s best rum. As someone who thrives on the rhythm of the ocean, I was curious to see how the same natural elements that fuel my passion for surfing could be harnessed to create such a renowned spirit.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by Julisia, our tour guide, whose warm smile and fluent English made us feel right at home. We began our journey in the storage area, where the air was thick with the sweet aroma of aging rum. It was fascinating to learn that the barrels used for aging were American White Oak, repurposed from American companies. The process of disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling these barrels, only to burn them out for their own aging, was a testament to the ingenuity and sustainability of the Ron Barcelo brand. The French White Oak barrels, reserved for their top-tier rum, added a unique flavor that was simply unmatched.

The Green Revolution

As we moved through the plant, I was struck by the seamless blend of tradition and innovation. The production areas, viewed from a catwalk, were a marvel of modern automation, yet the commitment to sustainability was what truly set Ron Barcelo apart. The entire operation was ‘Green,’ with the leftover sugar cane used to generate electricity for the plant. The ashes from this process were then returned to the fields as fertilizer, creating a beautiful cycle of productivity and respect for the land.

This approach resonated deeply with me, as it mirrored the natural cycles I observe in the ocean. Just as the waves rise and fall, the Ron Barcelo plant harnesses the power of nature to create something extraordinary. The final stop on our tour was the tasting area, a place where the art of rum-making truly came to life. We began with the youngest rum, gradually working our way up to the Imperial Premium Blend. Each sip was a revelation, but the Imperial stood out as a masterpiece of flavor and craftsmanship. It was, without a doubt, the best rum I had ever tasted.

The Gran Platinum and Barcelo Cream were also delightful, each offering a unique taste experience that lingered long after the last drop. As I savored these exquisite flavors, I couldn’t help but think of the ocean’s endless variety, each wave offering a new sensation, a new thrill.
