• Laolongtou (Old Dragon’s Head) - Situated along the coastal boundary of today’s Hebei and Liaoning provinces, Shanhaiguan derives its name from its distinctive location where the mountains (shan) converge with the sea (hai). The precise spot where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea is famously referred to as “Old Dragon’s Head” (Laolongtou).

Throughout Chinese history, Shanhaiguan has been a crucial frontline defense against northern ethnic groups from Manchuria, such as the Khitan, Jurchen, and Manchus. In 1381, Ming general Xu Da initiated the construction of a new fortress here, known as the “First Pass Under Heaven”. Xu Da also supervised the building of other significant Great Wall sections like Juyongguan and Mutianyu, contributing to much of what is recognized today as the Ming Great Wall. For nearly 300 years, Shanhaiguan played a vital role in defending the Ming capital and securing the empire’s eastern frontier.

• Shanhaiguan Gate Tower - Shanhai Pass is one of the most significant strategic passes along the Great Wall of China. Located in the Shanhaiguan District of Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, it marks the eastern terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall where the wall meets the sea. Designated as a National Cultural Heritage Site in 1961, Shanhai Pass is now a popular tourist attraction known for its historical importance and well-preserved architecture.

Some parts of the wall here have been restored for visitors, while others remain untouched, preserving their original, rugged charm.
