- Uros Floating Islands - Guests will be picked up from their hotel in the historic center of Puno between 6:45 and 7:00 AM. Before boarding the motorboat to Uros Island, there will be a brief stop at the boat pier where snacks and bottled water can be purchased.
Once settled on the boat, a local musician will welcome guests with Andean Folkloric music. The guide will introduce themselves and the boat captain, then provide an overview of the day’s itinerary on Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake.
The first stop will be at the iconic floating islands of Uros. During the journey from the mainland to one of the Uros Islands, guests can observe totora plants growing on Lake Titicaca. These plants are a fundamental food source and serve as a maintenance system that the Uros use to sustain the islands’ existence.
As the boat docks, local women in traditional attire will warmly welcome guests to their home. The island’s leader will demonstrate how the islands are constructed using totora plants and share a few words in their native language, Aymara.
The locals are known for their handicrafts, which guests may purchase if they wish. There is also an option to sail on a traditional totora reed boat (10 Soles) to the main island of Uros. Guests can have their passports stamped here as a souvenir if desired.
From here, the boat ride to Taquile Islands will begin. Guests may walk up to the open deck on the upper level of the boat to take photos of the floating islands they pass.
- Taquile Island - Rising from the green waters of Peru’s Lake Titicaca is the small island of Taquile, where local villagers have developed a thriving industry of knit handicrafts, crafted by the men of the community.
Taquile is home to a Quechua population of 2,000 people, primarily farmers, fishermen, and renowned weavers.
Unlike the traditional view of knitting and textile work as women’s work, it is the men of Taquile Island who perform much of the intricate thread work. The craftwork is divided between weaving and knitting; women handle the weaving, while knitting is the men’s responsibility.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant. After lunch, around 2:30 PM, guests will board the boat back to Puno. At approximately 4:30 PM, the boat will dock at Puno’s boat pier. Guests will be met upon arrival and driven back to their hotel in the historic center of the city.
