Chasing Waves and Wildlife: A Costa Rican Adventure
When the call of the wild beckoned, I couldn’t resist the allure of Costa Rica’s lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife. Join me as I recount my journey through the breathtaking parks and beaches of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, where nature and comfort coexist in perfect harmony.
Arrival in Paradise
The moment I stepped off the plane in Costa Rica, I felt the familiar embrace of the tropical air, a sensation that never fails to remind me of the countless surf trips I’ve embarked on across Central America. This time, however, I was here for something a little different. I had heard whispers of an incredible private tour that promised wildlife, parks, and comfort, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.
After a long journey, I was greeted by the warm smiles of David and Greivin, our guides for the adventure. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and as we drove through the lush landscapes in their air-conditioned van, I couldn’t help but feel at ease. The journey to our hotel was punctuated by stops to admire the vibrant toucans, a sight that never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I’ve seen them.
The first evening was spent at the Cariblue Beach and Jungle Resort, a place that felt like a hidden gem nestled between the jungle and the sea. As I settled into my room, the sound of the waves crashing in the distance was a comforting reminder of the ocean’s ever-present allure.
Exploring the Wild
The next day, we set out to explore the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Greivin, with his keen eye and deep knowledge of the local flora and fauna, guided us through the trails. His passion for the natural world was evident, and it was a joy to learn from someone so connected to the land.
As we hiked through the dense forest, the sounds of the jungle enveloped us. The rustling leaves, the distant calls of howler monkeys, and the occasional flutter of a bird’s wings created a symphony that was both exhilarating and calming. It reminded me of the rhythm of the ocean, a constant yet ever-changing presence.
After a morning of exploration, we found ourselves on the pristine sands of Playa Manzanillo. The beach was a perfect spot to unwind, and as I lay on the warm sand, I couldn’t help but think of the waves waiting for me in the days to come.
A Day of Relaxation
The following day was dedicated to relaxation, a concept that, as a surfer, I am well-acquainted with. We began with a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center, where we learned about the incredible efforts being made to protect Costa Rica’s wildlife. It was inspiring to see the dedication of those working to preserve the natural beauty of this country.
With the afternoon free, I took the opportunity to explore the beaches of Cocles. The sun was high, the water inviting, and the waves, though gentle, were a reminder of the ocean’s power. As I paddled out, I felt the familiar thrill of anticipation, the same feeling I get every time I chase a wave.
Our final day was spent at Cahuita National Park, a place where the jungle meets the sea in a breathtaking display of nature’s beauty. The guided tour was informative, but it was the freedom to explore the beaches and the town of Cahuita that truly captured my heart. As I wandered along the shore, I knew that Costa Rica had once again left its mark on me, a place of endless adventure and serene beauty.
