From Surfboards to Hiking Boots: A Coastal Adventure in Puerto Vallarta
When the waves take a backseat, and the jungle calls, it’s time for a coastal adventure. Join me as I trade my surfboard for hiking boots and explore the hidden beaches and lush trails of Puerto Vallarta.
A Sunrise Start to a Coastal Adventure
The sun had barely begun its ascent when my wife and I left our cozy AirBNB in Sayulita, eager to embark on the Beach and Jungle Walk adventure. With our surfboards left behind for the day, we traded the waves for a different kind of thrill—an invigorating hike along the stunning coastline of Puerto Vallarta. After a quick breakfast at Playa de los Muertos, we arrived at Boca de Tomatlán, ready to dive into the lush jungle trails that promised a day of exploration and discovery.
The trail began with a gentle incline, leading us away from the bustling town and into the embrace of the jungle. The path was a mix of flagstone promenades and rugged trails, each step taking us deeper into the heart of nature. The air was thick with humidity, but the promise of secluded beaches kept our spirits high. As we walked, the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore was a constant companion, a reminder of the adventure that lay ahead.
Hidden Beaches and Jungle Wonders
Our first stop was a secluded beach, where the waves beckoned us to play. The water was a refreshing escape from the heat, and we couldn’t resist the call of the ocean. After a quick dip, we continued our journey, each beach more enchanting than the last. The third beach we encountered was home to a private luxury resort, a stark contrast to the untouched beauty of the surrounding wilderness.
As we hiked, we marveled at the diverse flora and fauna that called this jungle home. The vibrant colors of the local plants and the occasional glimpse of wildlife added an element of wonder to our trek. Each stretch of trail offered a new perspective, a new view of the coastline that seemed to stretch on forever.
Our midday break was at a beach with a charming hotel and restaurant, RITUAL. The ceviche was a culinary delight, perfectly paired with a mezcal that warmed us from the inside out. The view from our table was nothing short of spectacular, a panoramic vista of the Pacific Ocean that made the hike worthwhile.
The Final Stretch and a Sunset Return
With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for the final stretch of our hike. The path led us to Las Animas Beach, where the local kids were body surfing in the big surf. We couldn’t resist joining them, the waves providing a thrilling end to our coastal adventure. Exhausted but exhilarated, we made our way to the pier to arrange a boat taxi back to Boca.
The ride back was a serene contrast to our adventurous day, the boat cutting through the water as the sun began its descent. As we arrived back at Boca, an ice cream stand offered a sweet reward for our efforts. The drive back to Puerto Vallarta was perfectly timed with the sunset, the sky painted in hues of orange and pink as we passed the iconic Los Arcos.
Our day ended with a delightful dinner at Barcelona Tapas, a fitting conclusion to a day filled with exploration and adventure. The Beach and Jungle Walk had offered a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and relaxation—a reminder of why we chase these experiences across the globe.
