Fun & MUDDY Excursion! (read for clothing/cruise pax tips) - The dune buggy excursion was so much fun - highly recommend! Before the excursion, I received a text message with detailed information on how to meet our guides at the pickup location, including photographs and a map. It was about a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise ship to the meeting location which is just outside the port of Amber Cove. *CRUISE PASSENGERS* If you're booking a cruise excursion, keep in mind that the time that you book is local time (Atlantic Standard Time) which may differ from ship time (Carnival's ships leaving from Florida are on Eastern Standard Time). I booked our excursion for 11AM AST, which was actually 10AM ship time - check the time that your ship arrives into port before booking. *WHAT TO WEAR* You will get extremely muddy and wet. I recommend wearing fast-drying clothes in dark colors that you don't mind getting dirty - consider athletic clothes or swimwear with water shoes or sandals. I brought a buff bandana to cover my nose and mouth. Helmets and goggles are provided - wear the goggles! Mud and rocks get kicked up from the tires in front of you, so protect your eyes!! *WHAT TO BRING* As little as possible. If you're bringing a bag, make sure it's one that you don't mind getting wet/dirty. I'd recommend a waterproof dry bag to store your valuables. Also bring cash for souvenirs/tips. Consider bringing a change of clothes (stored in a dry bag) to change into after the excursion - there are outdoor showers to rinse off in after the tour. *CAMERAS/PHONES* I brought my GoPro and iPhone for photos and videos during our excursion. I did not have my phone in a waterproof case and would not recommend doing so if your goal is to take photos because as soon as the plastic sleeve gets wet/dirty, it's going to be very challenging to wipe both the sleeve and the lens clean. I would recommend bringing a small microfiber cloth to wipe off your camera lenses regularly. If you have your phone and are not using it to take photos, I'd recommend storing in a waterproof bag. After meeting the staff at the pickup location, we took a quick open air shuttle ride to the starting location where we signed waivers and were fitted with helmets and goggles. We received a short safety briefing before getting into our dune buggies. The start of the drive is pretty tame as we passed through town, but once we got onto the dirt roads it got a lot more exciting. There are many puddles throughout..... I'm slightly suspicious that the tour operators purposely wet down the roads for the fun of the tour because it didn't seem that wet when we were driving through town. When we got to the first big puddle, our guide told my boyfriend to drive through the center of the puddle as fast as we could..... and he did - we got drenched! The water went OVER our dune buggy! If you don't want to get drenched, you can drive on the edges of the puddles where it's shallower. Our first stop was at a little cigar rolling shack. They had a water spigot and a bucket for us to wash our hands, as well as a bathroom. We tasted hot chocolate and had the opportunity to smoke a cigar. If we wanted to purchase anything, the guides told us that they would transport it back, so we didn't have to worry about it getting muddy. Our second stop was at a beach where we spent around 20 minutes. I opted to just swim in my clothes since I was so dirty. After the beach, we made our way back to our starting point where there were showers for us to rinse off. I was expecting to get a hard sales pitch for the photos they took of us, but I actually never saw them.... after we cleaned off, they put us right on a shuttle back to the port. We did notice when we got back that they had lockers for $5 - too bad we didn't see these before the tour because my brother-in-law had his laptop bag with him in the dune buggy (kept safe with a towel) and would've gladly rented a locker! I did not feel pressured at all to buy any extras or tip which was great.... but also, we would've been interested in the photos or renting a locker. Overall, a wonderful tour. Be sure to dress appropriately so you can have a fun time and enjoy!

Muddy - I wanted to love this experience exploring the Dominican Republic and was surprised by the immense level of poverty that we saw along our travels in the buggies. From the cruise ship you walk up to the freeway and meet your guides who then transport you to the base for the Dunn buggy adventures. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They take pictures all along the way and you have the option to buy them at the end of the The ride itself is slow and bumpy with it taking place along a muddy, clay, rocky road. Expect to get very dirty and very wet. Showers are available back at the base.

We had a great experience... - We had a great experience with this company, found the helmets and goggles weren't great. Reason for not giving it a 5 star. I have a smaller head and the goggles never stayed on and my husband had a larger head and the strap would come off the buckle having to reloop it. Otherwise going through the mud puddles are fun!!!
