Enjoy a guided walk through the rainforest to observe ancient trees, monkeys, birds, and insects in their natural environment.
Lago Sandoval - 1:00 PM – Lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon: embark on a kayaking adventure on the Madre de Dios River. Paddle to a nearby island home to capuchin monkeys and enjoy the surrounding wildlife, including turtles, butterflies, toucans, and parrots.
After dark: take a night boat excursion to search for caimans, whose glowing eyes can be seen with flashlights. You might also encounter nocturnal mammals like capybaras, armadillos, or pacas.
8:00 PM – Dinner.
Optional activity: Enjoy a jungle bonfire and storytelling under the stars.
Sandoval Lake & Jungle Night Walk
Lago Sandoval - 4:30 AM – Early breakfast.
5:00 AM – Visit Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. This beautiful 3 km lake is teeming with wildlife and surrounded by dense rainforest.
Hike approximately 3 km through the jungle to reach the lake, passing clay palm licks where macaws gather in the early morning to feed on minerals.
Observe aguaje palm forests, orchids, and large Amazonian trees such as lupuna and shihuahuaco. Wildlife sightings may include red howler monkeys, black caimans, giant river otters, herons, kingfishers, hoatzins (prehistoric-looking birds), and many more.
Lago Sandoval - 1:00 PM – Lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon: Try piranha fishing and catch other Amazon fish species like paco, palometa, sardines, catfish, etc. You can have your catch prepared for dinner.
Later: Experience a night jungle walk, offering a completely different perspective from the daytime. Spot crickets, grasshoppers, fireflies, frogs, toads, tarantulas, snakes, and the famous tree lizard Plica plica, a master of camouflage.
8:00 PM – Dinner.
Tapir Trail & Return
Puerto Maldonado - 8:00 AM – Breakfast.
Take a guided hike along the Tapir Trail, ending in a swampy aguaje palm forest, where wild fruits attract tapirs and other animals.
Enjoy an approximately 3-hour hike. Possible sightings include wild pigs, rodents, toucans, and oropendola birds.
Note: From November to April, this trail may flood, transforming into a seasonal wetland that serves as a habitat for anacondas – a fascinating ecosystem that changes with the seasons.
1:00 PM – Lunch.
4:30 PM – Return to the city.
