From there, a one-hour boat journey will take us to the lodge, where a refreshing regional fruit juice will be served as a welcome.
-
After settling into the accommodations, a two-hour guided trek through the lush tropical forest with a knowledgeable local guide will commence. During the hike, participants will encounter a variety of trees, some over five centuries old, and have the chance to observe wildlife such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This trek offers an opportunity to experience the enchanting Amazon Rainforest within the Tambopata National Reserve, which spans 278,000 hectares of protected land under Peruvian law.
Puerto Maldonado - - Following lunch, a visit to “Monkey Island” across the Madre de Dios River from the lodge will take place. Here, various monkey species, including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddle-back tamarin, and white capuchin, can be observed.
- After this activity, guests will return to the lodge.
Puerto Maldonado - - In the evening, a caiman search along the banks of the Madre de Dios River will be conducted. With some luck, the capybara, the world’s largest rodent weighing up to 60 kilos, might also be spotted. Participants should bring a flashlight for this activity.
- The day will conclude with dinner at the lodge and an overnight stay.
Day 2
Puerto Maldonado - - After an early breakfast, a brief boat ride will lead to the entrance of Lake Sandoval.
- Following a checkpoint, a 3-kilometer (approximately 2-mile) walk to the lake will occur. Lake Sandoval is one of the largest in the Tambopata National Reserve and is home to piranhas.
Puerto Maldonado - - Upon arrival, the guide will secure a rowing boat, and the group will navigate the lake to observe various bird and monkey species, including hoatzin cormorants, puma herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. With some fortune, the family of giant river otters (nearly two meters long) or the largest recorded alligator, over four meters long, might be seen.
- The group will then return to the lodge for a traditional lunch.
Puerto Maldonado - - In the evening, a night walk will allow guests to appreciate the diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures.
- Dinner and rest will follow.
Day 3
Puerto Maldonado - - At 5:30 a.m., a morning in the jungle will begin. The Canopy Walk-Way offers a unique perspective of the rainforest from approximately 30 meters high.
-
The bridges provide an opportunity to admire nature from a high vantage point, offering a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River.
-
From the platforms, various bird species such as toucans and macaws can be observed.
Puerto Maldonado - - After the walk, breakfast will be served.
- The group will then return to the city.
