Puerto Maldonado - Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed and transported to the office for a briefing about the excursion. The journey begins with a 1.5 to 2-hour car ride to the Tambopata River, covering 48 km on paved roads and 18 km on dirt roads, followed by a 10-minute trip to the lodge where lunch will be served.

During the dirt road segment, travelers can enjoy sights of butterfly swarms, traditional Amazonian communities, birds flying overhead, and wildlife such as agoutis and monkeys. Upon arrival, guests will be received and accommodated at the lodge. There will be an opportunity to visit the 40-meter canopy tower, offering breathtaking views of the rainforest.

From the tower, visitors can admire miles of untouched forest in every direction, with animals like macaws, toucans, and other vibrant birds being most active at this level. In the evening, a night walk will reveal fascinating creatures such as tree frogs, possibly snakes, tarantulas, stick insects, and other nocturnal animals, followed by dinner.

Tambopata National Reserve - This reserve is renowned for its protection of wildlife, flora, and fauna, as well as the stunning beauty of the southeastern Peruvian subtropical rainforest. It encompasses diverse habitats like aguajales, pacales, clay licks, chestnut groves, terrace forests, riparian forests, and lakes, creating unique ecosystems with a rich variety of species, many of which have limited ranges.

Puerto Maldonado is an outstanding destination for nature tourism and environmental education, thanks to its scenic resources and iconic flora and fauna. Attractions include oxbow lakes such as Sandoval, Cocococha, and Sachavacayoc, and the Chuncho and Colorado macaw clay licks, which host hundreds of psittacines.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - Caiman Spotting - Jungle Adventure

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - An early start at 4:30 am marks the beginning of an incredible journey to “EL CHUNCHO,” the world’s largest macaw clay lick. The 1.5-hour trip offers chances to spot capybaras, the largest rodents, tapirs, and possibly the stunning South American jaguar. Many visitors have captured photographic evidence of these magnificent mammals.

Upon reaching the Tambopata Macaw Clay Licks, guests will witness hundreds of parrots of various species feeding on the riverbank mud. Afterward, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, an ethnobotanical jungle walk will provide insights into medicinal plants, Amazonian woods, and opportunities to see more mammals and large trees.

A night hike is highly recommended, weather permitting, followed by dinner.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - This site is a major attraction for its size and birdwatching opportunities, particularly for macaws. The clay lick is famous for its spectacular sightings of various psittacids, including Ara ararauna, Ara macao, Ara chloropterus, Ara colounico, and Ara militaris.

These birds utilize the natural minerals to supplement their diet and neutralize toxins from fruits and wild seeds. The landscape, shaped by river erosion, reveals soils rich in mineral salts and organic components.

Tambopata Canopy Tower - Puerto Maldonado City - Airport or Bus Station

Puerto Maldonado - Before breakfast, guests have the option to take another jungle walk and visit the Canopy Tower to observe colorful birds like toucans, oropendolas, hummingbirds, trogons, woodpeckers, nunbirds, tanagers, and jacamars. The sunrise, weather permitting, is spectacular from the treetops, followed by breakfast at the lodge.

Finally, transportation will be arranged back to Puerto Maldonado city, ensuring guests arrive in time for their flights to Lima or Cuzco.
