During the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, Almourol was captured by D. Afonso Henriques in 1129, who then handed it over to the Order of the Temple.
- Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais - The original church dates back to the 12th century, under the direction of D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Templars, and served as a burial site for the Freires. The current church dates to the 13th century, during the reign of D. Afonso III, and is considered the most iconic work of national Gothic architecture. Its design served as a model for other religious temples, both cathedrals and convents, from north to south.
- Tomar - A city founded by Gualdim Pais, Templar master, in 1160. A short walk around the city will be included.
There will be a stop for lunch at this location.
- Igreja de Sao Joao Baptista - Located in the center of Tomar, the Church of St. John the Baptist was originally built in the 15th century but was rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1520, King D. Manuel elevated the Church to the Collegiate, incorporating the chapels of the royal patron.
- Convento de Cristo - The Convent of Christ in Tomar was associated with the Order of the Templars. Founded in 1162 by the Grand Master of the Templars, Don Gualdim Pais, the Convent of Christ still holds memories of these knight monks and their successors, the Order of Christ, who made this building their headquarters. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Templars played an important role in all the great eras and battles in Portugal, from the founding of the country with D. Afonso Henriques to the Discoveries. The headquarters of the Templars and, later, of the “Order of Christ” settled in Tomar, making this the Templar capital of Portugal and Spain and one of the most important in the medieval world.
