Terezin was the processing location where individuals were sent out to other work and death camps - It was a good drive 40 miles northwest of Prague, where this entire town (bordered by an 18th-century military fortress); where an ancient fortress structure was turned into a concentration camp by the Nazis. This trip was very meaningful for Tom, as it also allowed him to explore a MASSIVE fortification built in 1798 by the Hapsburg empire to defend the country from “then” any possible Russian invasion. In its day the 12-mile perimeter of the town of Terezin (named after St Tereza) was totally surrounded with a defensive double wall and mote, along with a connected side fort (also called the small fort or better known to Tom as a Keep = last line of defense STRONGHOLD) for citizens to escape to should the outer wall fortification be breached in 1798. In its day the fortification was never challenged by foreign invaders, and all the cannon armament was removed during the first world war as scrap metal. The small fort (And it is NOT really that small) is where the army garrison was housed and it also served as the town’s prison. At the start of WWII and the German occupation, most of the towns people had evacuated, so the Germans turned the now empty town (inside this large walled complex) into a Jewish ghetto (holding area) and thus a place (example = reverse corridor entrance at the bottom of a funnel) where the Germans organized further deportation out to other camps. The “small fort” facility became the entrance processing location for over 155,000 Jews / Gypsy’s / Homosexuals / Political dissidents, that the Germens wanted to eliminate. Of that number 35,000 died in Terezin from torture / hard work / execution / typhoid disease, and the rest then transported to other work / death camps. At the end of the war, with the Russians liberating the camp, many of the inmates had nowhere to go and stayed inside the ghetto for months, but typhus disease ran rapid and only 3,600 survived. Many Russian doctors and soldiers also died of typhus as they were trying to help the inmates. This tour turned into a powerful experience for us, as we were told of the terrible things that happened here to both Jewish families and political prisoners.

SUPER learning experience . - This was a very informative tour. While not a fun adventure, one w/sobering information on what Terezin used to be. Our driver was SO knowledgeable, pointing out all sorts of things from Prague to Terezin. Our tour guide at the camp was fabulous.

Moving and easy day trip from Prague. - The tour was moving, informative, and sobering. People who sign up should note that the meeting point is NOT at the address in the confirmation (on the side of Rudolfinum); it’s in front, outside. Look for the blue and white umbrellas. Nor is it self guided (that’s what we signed up for); we had charming guides who spoke an impressive number of languages and were very informative. Luckily we had enough cash on hand for a reasonable tip. It’s an hour each way so you can reasonably do something in the morning, do the tour, and be back in time for dinner. Highly recommend!!

Informative - Great tour and informative guide around the Terezín camp. Solid knowledge on historical events, and the museum at the end shed additional light to the information heard.

Interesting - Interesting tour. Half day only included the prison or small fortress so if you want to see more choose a full day option. But our guide was great and super friendly!

Pretty good tour - This tour had less interaction with the guide, but is still worth taking if you’re not going to Auschwitz. Easily found our guide and the arrangements were simple to follow.

Worse Tour EVER - The site was extremely interesting, but the tour was very badly planned and even worse done. The guide was for one hour at a very fast pace. One can tell she did not want to be there. Unbelievable how badly the tour was planned and done even worse. Go by yourself there in the morning and for a few $ you can get a one-on-one real professional tour from site. Allow a full day.
