Complimentary bottled water is provided in the vehicle. This tour is ideal for those interested in modern history, particularly World War II.
The first stop is Cernin Palace. During World War II, it served as the seat of the Reich Protector. Jan Masaryk, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and son of T. G. Masaryk, resided and worked here until his mysterious death in 1948, the year of the Communist coup. The palace is located near the Loreto and currently houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Petschkův palác - The Petschek family, who were Jewish, fled their home at the onset of the war. After the Nazi occupation of Prague, Petschek Palace was seized by Hitler’s forces, the same group responsible for sending Eisen’s mother to Auschwitz.
- Panenské Břežany, Zámek - This fascinating tour also includes a drive outside Prague to visit the former villas of R. Heydrich and K. H. Frank in Panenské Břežany, approximately a 30-minute drive from Prague. The Upper Castle, once K. H. Frank’s villa, now features an impressive World War II exhibition.
The Lower Castle in Panenské Břežany was not Reinhard Heydrich’s residence. It was confiscated from Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a Jewish businessman of Czech nationality, who fled before the Nazi invasion.
Reinhard Heydrich, assassinated by a Czech commando squad trained in Britain in 1942, remains a controversial figure. His son, Heider Heydrich’s decision to help restore the dilapidated castle in Panenské Břežany, where he once lived, has sparked outrage, leading to thousands signing an online petition against his involvement.
- St Cyril and St Methodius Cathedral - In May 1942, two Czechoslovak paratroopers, dispatched by their government in exile in London, assassinated Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi overseer of Czechoslovakia. After the attack, the paratroopers and several partisans who aided them sought refuge in the crypt of St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral.
Tragically, a fellow partisan betrayed their location to the Germans, who initially attempted to shoot their way into the crypt. When this failed, they flooded it with water. Realizing escape was impossible, the resistance fighters chose to end their own lives.
This dramatic story is recounted in a museum located in the church’s crypt, known as the National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror. The assassination of Heydrich resulted in the tragic loss of many innocent lives, including nearly all the residents of the village of Lidice.
- Military History Institute in Prague: The Army Museum Žižkov - The tour includes a visit to the Military History Museum of the Czech Republic. Visitors can explore weapons, soldiers, and other wartime artifacts, gaining insight into survival and combat. Numerous exhibits offer a chance to reflect on history.
- Jewish Museum in Prague - The Jewish Museum in Prague is a prominent museum of Jewish heritage in the Czech Republic and one of Prague’s most visited attractions. It boasts one of the world’s largest Judaica collections, with approximately 40,000 objects, 100,000 books, and an extensive archive of Czech and Moravian Jewish community histories.
