- Sanssouci Palace - Sanssouci Palace is renowned as one of Europe’s most exquisite palaces and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed between 1745 and 1747, it served as the summer residence for Frederick the Great. The palace is primarily a single-story structure, with the upper levels forming secondary wings, and it is beautifully situated on a terraced vineyard. Inside, visitors can admire the breathtaking interiors, particularly the Marble Hall, adorned with gold and marble. Other notable rooms include the Dining Room, which occasionally functioned as a courtroom, and the Music Hall, celebrated as a German Rococo masterpiece. The palace is encircled by an expansive park featuring a blend of French and English gardens. Six terraces are home to Southern European vines, fig trees, and yews. A stunning Baroque flower garden, complete with a fountain and numerous marble statues, adds to the charm. The vast park also boasts unique structures such as the grand New Palace, the Belvedere, the Golden Chinese Pavilion, the Dragon House, the Orangery, and the Roman Baths.
- Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen - Delve into this significant chapter of Nazi history at the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, now a museum and memorial. Over 200,000 individuals perished here between 1936 and 1945. Initially, the prisoners were primarily political adversaries of the Nazi regime, but later included those deemed racially or biologically inferior by the Nazis. The site featured wooden prison barracks, brick houses for SS personnel, and several factory buildings where prisoners were forced into slave labor. On April 22, 1961, the Sachsenhausen National Memorial was established at the former concentration camp site to symbolize the triumph of anti-fascism. It includes original buildings that now host permanent exhibitions.
