The caldera of the Fogo Volcano is the smallest caldera collapse of the island of São Miguel, with about 15 thousand years.
Given to its location in altitude, it is the most natural area and with the less human intervention suffered. It is an important hydrologic resource being classified as a Nature Reserve since 1974.
Because of its structure, it plays an extremely important role particularly in the replacement of underground water, regulation of the water cycle, biomass production, retention of sediments and nutrients and is therefore classified as Ramsar site.

You will traverse the Fogo Volcano from South to North, or vice versa, with the journey being determined by the weather conditions. Atop Pico da Barrosa, 947m above sea level, one can take in the diverse local wildlife and plant life during our journey. Contained within a vast crater is the enchanting Lagoa do Fogo, located atop the Fogo (Fire) Volcano at an elevation of 575m above sea level. The mesmerizing landscape is enriched by the lush vegetation. To the South, you will explore Caloura’s fishing port and its Lava Fajã of Caloura, a result of basaltic lava flows from the surrounding volcanic cones. To the North, you’ll come across Praia de Santa Barbara (Beach), known for its impressive waves and stunning scenery. You will also visit Ponta do Cintrão, which boasts a striking view of the North West coast, and Salto do Cabrito waterfall, surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful scenery.
